Amber Rudd resigns as home secretary over Windrush generation scandal

In her letter to Mrs May, Ms Rudd said: "I feel it is necessary to do so because I inadvertently misled the Home Affairs Select Committee over targets for removal of illegal immigrants during their questions on Windrush".

Ms Rudd has previously emphasised her commitment to tackling illegal immigration but admitted that these steps have had an "unintended and sometimes devastating" impact on people from the Windrush generation who are here legally but have struggled to get documentation to prove their status.

The UK government, mainly the Home Office and Premier Theresa May, are now in deep water following their promises to deal with the Windrush generation crisis, namely meet the interests of the Caribbean natives who have always been residing in Britain, but have been denied benefits.

But allies said that revelations in the Guardian on Friday that Rudd had in fact been informed of specific targets for the removal of immigrants - having been copied in on a detailed six-page memo giving details of them - were the last straw.

In remarks to the Home Affairs Select Committee last week Rudd said: "We don't have targets for removals".

Khan had stopped short of demanding the home secretary's resignation, believing she should be given a chance to explain and put right the evident administrative failings and chaos inside the Home Office.

Colleagues came to her defence on Saturday, with Justice Secretary David Gauke telling Sky News he was confident Ms Rudd had not meant to mislead anyone over whether she knew about migrant removal targets.

Numerous MPs including Diane Abbott, David Lammy and the SNP's Alison Thewliss all questioned whether Ms Rudd should continue in her role.

Britain's Home Secretary Amber Rudd speaks at the Conservative Party conference in Manchester, October 3, 2017.

Ms Rudd's aim of increasing "enforced deportations" would not have affected Windrush migrants, as they were threatened with "voluntary departure" (The term "voluntary" describes the method of departure rather than the choice of whether or not to depart - those leaving in this way are able to approach the Home Office for financial assistance with travel costs).

Prime Minister Theresa's May's office said late Sunday that May had accepted Rudd's resignation. Amber Rudd knew of the targets she pretended didn't exist. "It's time for Rudd to go".

He added that the Home Secretary did set an "ambition" to increase the number of illegal immigrants being deported by 10 per cent, but that this was "very different" from a target.

Their erroneous targeting stemmed from a "hostile environment" immigration policy pioneered by May when she was interior minister between 2010 and 2016, and then continued by Rudd.

"I asked her how many people have been imprisoned in her own country, she said she didn't know".

"As Home Secretary I will work to ensure that our immigration policy is fair and humane", she Tweeted.
