Bayern Munich confirm Niko Kovac as next coach on three-year deal

After securing a sixth straight German league title last weekend and booking a Champions League semi-final place in midweek, this was another dominant display from Bayern, who have a German Cup semi-final at Leverkusen on Tuesday.

Bayern's sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic said despite losing to Real in the 2017 quarter-finals, they held no fear for the Bavarians.

"The German record champions and the 46-year-old have agreed a three-year contract from 1 July 2018 to 30 June 2021".

"Niko played for Bayern, he knows the people in charge and the club's structures and DNA".

Bayern sports director Hasan Salihamidzic said, "we lost to Real past year and meant to do better this time". The other semi-final will be between European heavyweights Bayern Munich and holders Real Madrid, who needed a dramatic stoppage-time penalty from Cristiano Ronaldo to see off Juventus after the Italian outfit had come back from 3-0 down in the first leg to level the tie.

Niko Kovac is a surprise selection as the new Bayern Munich coach, replacing veteran Jupp Heynckes in the Allianz Arena dugout.

The elder Kovac was also coach of the Croatian team with his brother as assistant manager.

Wagner made way for Lewandowski and the Poland global tucked Joshua Kimmich's cross past Sommer in the 82nd minute, but he scuffed a chance at the death that would have seen Bayern register six for the third successive Bundesliga home match. And in a one-off game against Real Madrid or Bayern Munich, Liverpool are a match for either.

"The team is excited for the game", Hecking told the club's website.

"We will have news in the next days", Salihamidzic said.

Bayern did not reveal the cost of poaching Kovac, but both Bild and Sport Bild claimed that his departure before the end of his Frankfurt contract in 2019 would cost Bayern 2.2 million euros.

Kovac, far right, saved Eintracht Frankfurt from relegation in a play-off against Nuremberg in 2016. "Colombia could do well too because they've got some great players". Bayern have thought of themselves and not for a second about Eintracht Frankfurt. Respect is hugely important in such a collective.

Bayern, back in the semifinals for the seventh time in nine seasons, are looking to reach the final for the first time since they won it in 2013.

Kovac will need to adjust to instructing established stars at Bayern, rather than young players of promise still eager to learn, and he will be expected to maintain the club's high standards.
