Injured Spurs Star Kawhi Leonard Returns to NY for Rehab

Spurs All-NBA forward Kawhi Leonard returned to NY last Monday to continue rehabbing his lingering quad injury, coach Gregg Popovich told reporters before Sunday afternoon's home game against Houston.

Leonard has been away from the team since Tuesday with no timetable set on a possible return to San Antonio.

Leonard tore a tendon in his quadriceps in May and missed the first 27 games of the season.

The big question for the Spurs - and their fans - isn't whether Kawhi Leonard is going to return this season.

The announcement comes after a reported player's only meeting to address Leonard's injury. Several players quizzed him about the injury situation and the next day, veteran guard Manu Ginobili told reporters, "he is not coming back". Dealing him to the Lakers would also be "doing right" by the two-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year as San Antonio grants him his wish of playing for his hometown club, Early said.

The Cavaliers are 5 in the league in scoring this season with 110.7 points per game. The younger Drew had appeared in 30 career National Basketball Association games.

"I've been through it", Parker told reporters. I believe the real question is whether Kawhi Leonard is going to return next season. Same kind of injury (as Leonard's), but mine was a hundred times worse, but the same kind of injury. He returned for a nine-game stretch in December and January, averaging 16.2 points and 4.7 rebounds. "You just try to stay positive".

Leonard's use of outside doctors reportedly irritated the Spurs and has prompted speculation regarding Leonard's long-term future with the club.

The Spurs take on the Houston Rockets on Sunday.

"He's trying to get well", Popovich said. "When he and his group feel he's ready, he'll be ready".

Two things stand out: 1) There is still no timetable for Leonard's return, and 2) It's a bit odd that Popovich, and presumably the Spurs organization, are not in constant communication regarding the health of their franchise superstar.
