John Giannandrea Leaves Google To Join Apple

In a bid to catch up with its AI rivals, Apple has managed to hook Google's AI chief.

Apple has hired John Giannandrea, Google's former head of search and artificial intelligence, to head its own AI and machine learning unit.

However, some might argue that the main reason why Apple made a decision to equip iPhone X with a bezel less display is because Samsung did it with Galaxy S8.

What's interesting is that Google has been doing its best to keep all the information about its AI technology secret. Apple's voice-activated Siri search tools lag that of Amazon.com's (AMZN) Alexa as well as Google's digital assistant in consumer applications. Looking at the pace at which the counterparts are unlocking AI vast potential, Giannandrea's recruitment is a big catch for Apple.

Forecast: The Snow's Ending, But It Will Still Be Chilly
One day after a mild Easter Sunday , yet another winter storm rolled into New York City overnight and into this morning. Scattered snow showers were still moving out of the region this morning, especially in the eastern part of the state.

Giannandrea joined Google in 2010 when it purchased Metaweb, a start-up where he served as chief technology officer.

On Monday, Giannandrea stepped down from his position at Google.

To fortify AI division, Apple has rolled out other high-post vacancies in the field. These assets are a building blocks of neural networks, which in turn form the foundation of deep-learning algorithms.

Facebook and Google are already champions in this field, and much of that owes to its data collection policies spanning billions of users spread all over the world. In fact, their hundreds of researchers regularly publish research papers that help update internal products and the AI research community. Many amongst the industry have pointed out that Apple's attitude towards data collection and user privacy, although appreciable from an ideological perspective, hampers its progress in the industry. Therefore it has access to the public records only. When news broke yesterday that Giannandrea was unexpectedly stepping down as Google's AI chief, he immediately became perhaps the most eligible tech executive on the market. He was CTO for five years at Netscape in the late 1990s and CTO at a startup Metaweb, which aimed to catalog the internet's knowledge by making it more understandable to computers, prior to joining Google.
