Kentucky governor under fire for comments on teachers

It was then that Bevin claimed that the teachers' strike had led to children being left alone at home and that all manner of bad things befell them.

"I guarantee you somewhere in Kentucky today, a child was sexually assaulted that was left at home because there was nobody there to watch them", Bevin, a Republican, told reporters Friday evening after teachers swarmed the Capitol by the thousands over a battle to raise education funding in the state. "I guarantee you somewhere today a child was physically harmed or ingested poison because they were home alone because a single parent doesn't have any money to take care of them", Gov. Bevin said. "If we want to create a world without child abuse, we can not tolerate the governor's comments". "Some were introduced to drugs for the first time - because they were vulnerable and left alone".

Teachers in Kentucky are joined by colleagues in Oklahoma, West Virginia, and other states, who have gone on strike to demand higher pay and better working conditions. Clearly, Bevin thinks teachers hold an important job, if that's what he sees as the consequences of their absence. The tax bill includes a 50-cent increase in the cigarette tax, and a 6 percent sales tax on some services such as home and auto fix.

Now, Bevin has apologized for his grotesque accusations. Instead, he trotted out the old I'm sorry you interpreted my words to mean the very thing I said line of excuse.

Report raises questions about safety of Allegiant Air
The CBS program 60 Minutes reported Sunday that Allegiant had more than 100 mechanical issues from January 2016 to October 2017. Our team members safely operate thousands of flights each week, which will transport more than 14 million passengers this year.

Bevin made his comments on his YouTube and Twitter page during a four-minute video that was posted Sunday.

"Governor Bevin claims there was a misunderstanding, but the people of Kentucky heard loud and clear what he said and today's video shows he still does not comprehend why so many were understandably upset", [House Democratic Leader Rocky] Adkins said in a statement. I appreciate that you do. He added, "I know a tremendous amount of people didn't fully appreciate what I was communicating". "That's my responsibility, it truly is".

The surge of activism is enough to cast doubts on whether Republicans can keep control of the state House of Representatives in the fall and whether Bevin, an ally of the Trump administration, could survive a re-election campaign in 2019. "Test scores and other academic achievement indicators must be improved across the state, and I look forward to working with the Board to provide all Kentucky students, regardless of wealth or zip code, with educational opportunities created to meet their specialized learning needs and prepare them for success in college and careers".

"You can stand here all day and act like you are all for (education) until it comes time to pay for it". The Governor is sorry you misunderstood him.
