Loud blasts heard in Riyadh as Saudi Arabia intercepts missile

Minutes later, al-Arabia TV reported that Saudi air defenses had intercepted a ballistic missile over the capital.

Saudi Arabia said it intercepted a ballistic missile over Riyadh and shot down two drones in another part of the country on Wednesday (April 11), in the latest attacks by Iranian-backed Yemeni rebels showing improved military capabilities more than three years into the conflict.

The facility reportedly belonged to the oil massive Saudi Aramco. The Saudi led coalition has been performing airstrikes in war-torn Yemen since 2015, supporting government forces in their fight against the Houthis.

Colonel Turki al-Maliki, the spokesman for the Arab Coalition Forces fighting in Yemen, said that at 7:40 am local time air defense systems detected an object and dealt with it accordingly.

The Houthis said they targeted southern areas of Saudi Arabia with Qasif-1 drones.

The missiles were directed towards the capital Riyadh and cities of Jizan and Najran.

"The air drive launched the execution of air strikes with the Qasif 1 aircraft on Aramco in Jizan (province)", al-Masirah said on its official Twitter account, consistent with Reuters.

Primarily based on a United Nations report, larger than 9,245 people have been killed in Yemen since March 2015, larger than half of which had been civilians.
