Report raises questions about safety of Allegiant Air

The CBS program 60 Minutes reported Sunday that Allegiant had more than 100 mechanical issues from January 2016 to October 2017.

The broadcast revealed that the airline's planes were three and a half time more likely to have mid-air mechanical failures than rival U.S. airlines, according to Federal Avaiation Administration documents.

A separate statement sent by Allegiant Air to customers following the "60 Minutes" report calls the segment an "irresponsible, grossly misleading story", and says the report was instigated by a terminated employee who is suing the airline.

FOX5 was the first to report that Allegiant had to cancel or reschedule 11 flights out of Las Vegas over the span of a single weekend because of mechanical issues.

The story was a surprise to Bob Whitmer, manager of Owensboro-Daviess County Regional Airport. The people, however, through social media have shown their active participation and have given their views too for the Air Allegiant that they won't be travelling in that aircraft.

Kent Boyd, spokesperson for Springfield-Branson National Airport, said, "Keep in mind that Allegiant has flown from this airport for more than a decade".

Because of pilot-labor issues in 2015, FAA moved up Allegiant's 2018 evaluation for its certificate to fly passengers to 2016.

In 2015, the Tampa Bay Times said Allegiant planes were "four times as likely to fail during flight as those operated by other major USA airlines".

He also said the flight to Las Vegas has always been a huge success, noting it typically flies with 80-to-90 percent capacity.

Pence: US prepared to respond to possible retaliation by Syria
He learned only Tuesday that he would be attending in Trump's place so the president could manage the US response to Syria.

60 Minutes reports that passengers were not told what they were breathing, but the airline confirmed that the fumes were Skydrol 4, a hazardous hydraulic fluid.

"To that end, we welcome any outside review of our safety oversight system, and we welcome the opportunity to present a complete and accurate picture of how that system works".

"The number of inflight incidents that Allegiant has had speaks volumes, it is simply unacceptable", Alan Price, a former chief pilot for Delta Air Lines, told The Associated Press.

The Thomson family we spoke to says they woke up this morning to text messages from their loved ones in Florida, offering to drive and pick them up in Atlanta instead after hearing the report.

Tim Davis, the president of Suzi Davis Travel in Bloomington, who books travel through Bloomington's Central Illinois Regional Airport, said he believes air travel and travel on Allegiant remains safe despite the report.

In the agency's defense, the FAA Associate administrator Ali Bahrami said in a letter that "The FAA is vigilant in scrutinizing the actions of all airlines and is prepared to act on all information". Those with fewer boardings get $150,000.

In addition, the airport surpassed the two-million passenger mark for the first time a year ago.

Some local residents hadn't seen the CBS report and said they'd had positive experiences with the airline, but also said safety is a priority. Our team members safely operate thousands of flights each week, which will transport more than 14 million passengers this year.
