Suspected Golden State serial killer is behind bars

The man suspected of being the so-called Golden State Killer - who is tied to about a dozen killings and at least 50 rapes across California in the '70s and '80s - was charged on Wednesday in series of crimes in Orange County.

A 72-year-old former police officer has been arrested in the decades-old "Golden State Killer" case in California, according to officials in Sacramento.

The suspected serial killer, Joseph James DeAngelo, was surprised when he was confronted by officers and arrested on Tuesday afternoon in Citrus Heights in Sacramento County, said Sacramento County Sheriff Scott Jones.

"We all knew. that we were looking for a needle in a haystack, but we all knew the needle was there", Schubert said.

When crime lab employees and DNA analysts made the connection to DeAngelo in their lab findings over the last 6 days, Sacramento authorities then moved forward with surveillance over DeAngelo.

"This was a truly a convergence of emerging technology and dogged determination by detectives", Jones added. "It wasn't swift but it will be sure".

Ventura County District Attorney Gregory Totten said DeAngelo was charged with two counts of capital murder in the 1980 deaths of Charlene and Lyman Smith.

Authorities said DeAngelo was a former cop in two different agencies. He worked as a police officer in Auburn, California for some time, though he was sacked in 1979 after he shoplifted from a drug store. "We don't have a full picture yet".

"We used to just call him 'Freak, '" said Bedes-Correnti. "This was certainly a shock to them".

Alabama QB Competition Heats Up After A-Day Game
His comments also seem to prove that he prefers to see his quarterback try to pass rather than run when in trouble. His main competition for the starting quarterback job, Tua Tagovailoa , sat out with an injured hand.

Bruce Harrington, brother of Dana Point victim Keith Harrington, responded to the arrest by saying, "It is time for the victims to begin to heal, so long overdue".

George Hirsch, who said Wednesday he witnessed DeAngelo's arrest, described the suspect as someone who was quiet most of the time but "a little bit out of control".

"For the 51 ladies who were brutally raped, sleep better tonight.he isn't coming through the window", said Harrington. "He's now in jail and he's history".

Most of the crimes took place near Sacramento and in the east Bay Area, authorities said Wednesday.

His alleged victims ranged in age from 13 to 41, and included women alone at home, with their children, or their spouses. The genetic material was not a match, but there were enough similarities for investigators to return for more and they said they were able to get a conclusive match. Writer Michelle McNamara worked with investigators on the case while writing her book, "I'll Be Gone in the Dark", which was not completed before her sudden death in April 2016.

But her husband and greatest cheerleader, Emmy-winning actor/comedian Patton Oswalt, who saw her book through to completion and publication in February, did.

"The answer has always been in Sacramento", Schubert said.

To Oswalt, McNamara was "Marge Gunderson in Fargo, not Chilton in The Silence of the Lambs", referring to Frances McDormand's unceremonious small-town detective who caught a killer, versus the pompous sanitarium director (Anthony Heald) who was jealous of Federal Bureau of Investigation trainee Clarice Starling (Jodie Foster) for her ability to get information out of his prisoner, Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins).

Harvey told the publication that she discovered four law enforcement cars pull up to DeAngelo's address wearing vests and helmets at about 4 p.m., according to The Bee. "He's a very sick man and I was the one carrying all these feelings around". I felt it on my neck. "I could hear him from inside my house yelling and screaming".
