The nation celebrates Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr's life

On the evening of April 4, 1968, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was fatally shot in Memphis, Tennessee. After all, this is a movement about love, greater love, more love, and valuing love.

Fifty years ago today, a single gunshot rang out at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis. The news arrived on a busy Thursday afternoon in the Bay Area.

"He was a man of marching, he was a man that was non-violent", the sanitation worker said. "What people too often forget is that beyond inspiring speeches and letters, Dr. King held a deep understanding of strategy and an expert execution of his vision". "It was a hole that can never be filled in our lives".

After visiting Memphis, Jackson was inspired to participate in King's funeral.

It's even harder to change the bitterness of those who were enslaved and then freed during the Civil War era only to be treated far less than equals to whites for the next 100 years after as a people they had been freed.

The daughter of the late Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.is calling him "the apostle of nonviolence" on the 50th anniversary of his assassination.

In a separate proclamation declaring Wednesday a "day to honour Dr King's legacy", Mr Trump said that "it is not government that will achieve Dr King's ideals" but rather the people, who "must actively aspire to secure the dream of living together as one people with a common purpose".

King's assassination sent shock waves, and angered many Americans, especially those in African-American communities.

Russian general: Salisbury poisoning could lead to last war in history
Skripal and his daughter have been in hospital since ingesting the deadly nerve agent novichok in Salisbury, Wilts on March 4. Gary Aitkenhead, chief executive at Porton Down, told Sky News it was "not our job" to specify the source of the poison.

The best way for people to honor King, Jones argues, is registering to vote and becoming politically active.

Andre Gipson, the local president for the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, says about 400 members from other cities are in Memphis for the march. But the Bay Area remained relatively calm, despite the shooting death of Black Panther Bobby Hutton by Oakland police on April 6, two days after King's assassination.

Some of the sanitation workers who participated with King in a 1968 strike sat in the front row and were treated like celebrities, with audience members stopping to take photos with them before the event started. I may not get there with you. Golden called it a "seminal event in my life". King was pronounced dead an hour later at 7:05 p.m.at St. Joseph's Hospital.

King's life and legacy are remarkable.

On April 5, about 200 black Williston students peacefully marched to the downtown New Hanover County Courthouse to hold a prayer service in memory of King.

Observances marking King's death were planned coast-to-coast.

King had delivered his "I've Been To the Mountaintop" speech at Memphis' Mason Temple Church of God in Christ the night before he was assassinated. Not many thought we would ever see that, but we did. The man, later identified as Marcus Wayne Chenault Jr. of OH, fired his gun, hitting Alberta King, church deacon Edward Boykin and congregation member Jimmie Mitchell. Commission is holding a commemorative vigil from 10 a.m.to 11 a.m. Governor Hutchinson will be a keynote speaker.
