The snapshot which best sums up Welbeck's latest display for Arsenal

Arsenal forward Danny Welbeck scored twice and somehow missed an absolute sitter during his side's freakish 3-2 Premier League win over struggling Southampton at the Emirates Stadium.

The England attacker then got himself on the scoresheet 10 minutes later.

This was a free hit for them, but it was of paramount importance for Southampton, who were on the verge of claiming a valuable point in their battle against relegation, after opening the scoring through Shane Long and Charlie Austin coming on in the second half to equalise.

The south-coast outfit also had a second Long goal ruled out for offside and defender Wesley Hoedt saw his header cleared off the line by Elneny.

Victory lifted Arsenal to within three points of fifth-placed Chelsea, who were held at home by West Ham, while Southampton remain 18th, three points away from safety.

In a wild last few minutes, Mohamed Elneny and Southampton's Jack Stephens were sent off in separate incidents.

With a sixth place nearly guaranteed in the League and a spot for the League Europa last 4 well in control, Arsenal are playing their best football now.

Puel's successor, Mauricio Pellegrino, was sacked in March this year with the Saints having won just one of their last 17 league matches. "It just shows the level of competition in the Premier League", he said.

He added: "I hope we will have the opportunity to play together - it's something I said when I first arrived that I hoped to play with him".

The home side soon found themselves in front as Welbeck scored his first league goal since September.

A Premier League trophy on the Emirates continues to elude them although, now 14 seasons since their final triumph when the invincible's gained in 2004.

After Aubameyang's equaliser - his sixth goal in seven Premier League appearances since joining from Borussia Dortmund in January - Long came close again.

Southampton boss Mark Hughes, speaking to Sky Sports: "We have hard games coming up, we know that but we have to show qualities and strength in our mindset".

But Welbeck insisted: "My mind's fully focused on Arsenal at the moment and with the England stuff, that will take care of itself because I've got my job to do here first and foremost".
