Trump to skip annual White House correspondents' dinner

President Donald Trump will be a two-year no-show at the traditional annual White House Correspondents' Association dinner, sending his regrets and his press secretary in his place.

In lieu of attending last year's dinner, Mr Trump held a rally in Pennsylvania where he told the crowd the United States media were incompetent and biased.

"I sort of feel like the press is so bad, and so fake", he added. "So it's probably unlikely I'll do it".

Trump chose not to attend last year's event, his first in office, and became the first president since Ronald Reagan to decline the invitation.

The annual dinner, a fundraiser for college scholarships and a venue for reporting awards, mixes politicians, journalists and celebrities and is typically attended by the president and first lady.

The decision is no surprise given Trump's relationship with the media.

Mr. Trump has continued to dismiss news stories as "fake news" when he considers them unflattering to himself or to his administration. In recent days he has focused his attention on The Washington Post, its owner, Jeff Bezos, and the company that made Mr. Bezos among the richest people in the world, Amazon.

Although Trump will not be there, White House Correspondents' Association President Margaret Talev said at a National Press Club symposium she was hopeful that the administration will be more involved this year.

He rented Capitol Hill accommodation from the wife of an energy lobbyist a year ago at the below-market rate of US$50 per day and used taxpayer funds for first-class travel.

Reagan, of course, was recovering from an assassination attempt when he skipped the dinner that year.

Mr. Trump's nine-minute appearance on WABC was not exactly an outlier when it comes to high-ranking administration officials making time for local NY programming.

"In keeping with tradition, Press Secretary Sarah Sanders also will represent the administration at the head table".

The dinners have historically featured a speeches from the president, offering a chance to practice self-deprecation or poke fun at their contemporaries, as well as professional comedians, who often set the presidents in their sites.
