Trump wins pledges of 1600 troops for Mexico border duty

Trump wins pledges of 1600 troops for Mexico border duty

Speaking Monday with reporters after addressing the troops, Ducey said the deployment isn't politically motivated, even as he claimed there is finally an administration in Washington that cares about the border.

Ducey says the Arizona troops' mission is "about providing manpower and resources to support federal, state, county, tribal and local law enforcement agencies in stopping the flow of criminals, narcotics, weapons and ammunition that is being trafficked into our state".

The group didn't make it into the US, but this is the type of activity the president wants to stop by deploying the National Guard to the border. They will be integrated with 100 Texas Guardsmen who had been working on a previous border support mission.

New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez's office talked about that larger than 80 troops would deploy later this week.

Ducey told reporters later that the deployments are needed to stop a surge of border crossings since March and accused the USA government of previously ignoring the border "for almost a decade".

Ducey did not dispute that apprehensions along the Arizona-Mexico border are nonetheless as low as they've been in decades.

"We may be in this for the long haul", he said.

He also said he doesn't think the border is a partisan issue.

Trump's call for sending troops to the border came after he was heavily criticized by his supporters for passing a federal budget that only allocated $1.6 billion for border security.

President Trump has said he wants to use the military at the border until progress is made on his proposed border wall, which has mostly stalled in Congress.

The New Mexico Guard members could help with air support, surveillance and infrastructure repairs, Hull said.

Mr Trump and administration officials have said that rising numbers of people being caught at the southern border, while in line with seasonal trends in recent years, require an immediate response. SC despatched troops to the border all through Operation Soar Start, the border deployment ordered by Bush in 2006.

Ducey said the troops would be stationed in the Tucson and Yuma sectors.

California Gov. Jerry Brown, a Democrat, is considering sending California National Guardsmen to the border, according to Lt. Col. Thomas Keegan, a A Guard spokesman.

"You know, you don't want to say to people that are trafficking drugs and human beings across the border how long you're going to be there and show them a timetable", Ducey said. He said the country should be focusing on security and economic cooperation "without further militarizing border communities".

The Republican Ducey in a tweet Monday said more of the state's Guard members will be deployed on Tuesday.
