Turnbull loses 30th consecutive Newspoll

On the day Malcolm Turnbull hit the benchmark of 30 consecutive Newspoll losses, he has admitted regret over using the figure when rolling Tony Abbott from the nation's top job.

'If you truly believe [the Newspoll] is exactly the sentiment of the people, then you also have an obligation not to drive your party, or the government, off a cliff, ' he told Sky News.

On Saturday, a poll by Fairfax/Ipos in the Australian Financial Review said 62 percent of those surveyed want Turnbull to remain prime minister over Labor leader Bill Shorten.

"After the flipping and flopping by Bill Shorten over the Carmichael Mine project, the Central Queensland public are beginning to see the Opposition Leader can not be trusted to keep his word and starting to see the real "Backflip" Bill will cut mining jobs in CQ to save his hide in the trendy inner-city suburbs".

Conservative WA Liberal MP Andrew Hastie, a good friend of Mr Abbott, said Australians would respect Mr Turnbull if he confronted the expected Newspoll loss head-on.

Finance Minister Mathias Cormann said the prime minister had the support of the party room.

"I can assure you I have addressed it - I regret ... making the remarks about 30 Newspolls at the time but what I promised to do was to provide economic leadership and traditional cabinet government and I have done both", he said. But Opposition Deputy Leader Tanya Plibersek said the impending loss would be down to the policies Mr Turnbull is pursuing. We have lost 30 Newspolls in a row, ' Mr Turnbull said at the time.

The tie will now be decided by the fifth and final rubber, as David Ferrer takes on World No. 34 Philipp Kohlschreiber . On Saturday, France's Nicolas Mahut and Pierre-Hugues Herbert will face Fognini and Simone Bolelli in the doubles.

Former prime minister Tony Abbott said he would not "obsess over polls" but called for the Coalition to reduce immigration and invest in coal-fired power to win back the support of voters.

According to Newspoll, he stands one point ahead of Julie Bishop as preferred Liberal leader on 28 per cent, while Mr Abbott (13 per cent) and Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton (9 per cent) find themselves well behind their moderate counterparts. Based on that, coup leaders acted, saying we'd lose election.

"If we continue with Mr Abbott as prime minister it is clear enough what will happen".

"That's, I suppose, a question that really should be posed to the person who made polls the metric", Mr Abbott told 2GB Radio.

Mr Abbott, who has been pushing for new coal-fired power stations, is touring the Latrobe Valley on Monday as part of his annual charity bike ride. The next Newspoll is out on April 8.Three sitting Australian prime ministers have been ousted by their own parties since 2010, dumped by their colleagues nearly as soon as their popularity began to wane.

"Malcolm Turnbull and I know this better than anyone", he said. "Both MT&BS wld be long gone if we applied that standard now", he said.
