United Nations ambassador, White House quarrel over timing on sanctions

United Nations ambassador, White House quarrel over timing on sanctions

The tripartite Western countries announced that strikes were carried out as a punitive measure against Damascus for a suspected poison gas attack they claimed was purportedly conducted on April 7 by the Syrian government on Douma, the largest town in Eastern Ghouta near the Syrian capital, which reportedly killed 60 people and injured hundreds more.

The U.S. also said it fears the site may have been tampered with.

She said the United States had information that both chlorine and sarin nerve gas were used in the attack and was concerned that evidence was deteriorating the longer inspectors were kept from reaching the site. CNN, the Guardian and the New York Times all said that the OPCW experts were either "blocked" or "barred" from the alleged chemical attack site.

"We can not go back to a world where the use of chemical weapons becomes normalised".

Syria and Russian Federation deny unleashing poison gas on April 7 during their offensive on Douma, which ended with the recapture of the town that had been the last rebel stronghold near the capital, Damascus.

The government insists the incident in Douma on 7 April was fabricated.

OPCW Director-General Ahmet Üzümcü said the United Nations Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS) had chose to carry out reconnaissance at two sites in the town of Douma before the inspectors would visit them.

"It is our understanding the Russians may have visited the attack site", he said in comments at a closed-door meeting which were obtained by Reuters.

"Not even a day passed after the missile strikes when their organizers started putting forward unusual and political initiatives", Nebenzia said.

After Game 2, TNT's Ernie Johnson asked the Inside the National Basketball Association crew if the series would go seven games. Jamal Crawford scored 16 points for the eighth-seeded Timberwolves, who are in the playoffs for the first time since 2004.

Experts arrived in Damascus on Saturday, but they have been unable to visit the nearby town of Douma because of "security issues" cited by Russian Federation.

Her remarks came as she briefed lawmakers at the House of Commons about the weekend airstrikes held with the USA and France, which targeted the Assad regime's chemical weapons facilities.

Earlier this month, four Iranian military personnel were killed in an airstrike on Syria's T4 air base, also in Homs.

The team was widely expected to visit Douma on Wednesday, but a United Nations security team carrying out reconnaissance in the city came under fire Tuesday, further delaying experts from going in, a UN source told CNN.

The Syrian government and Russian Federation have denied using chemical weapons and accused rebels, with Western backing, of using such weapons or faking such an attack. Israel did not confirm or deny mounting the raid.

The accounts contradict what the Syrian government and Russian Federation have reported: that there was no gas attack in Douma.

However, Russia has repeatedly denied all allegations.

Hamish de Bretton-Gordon, former head of the British army's chemical weapons unit who is now a consultant on chemical and biological weapons, said Tuesday that his contacts at clinics in Douma told him doctors from the suburb had been taken in recent days into central Damascus for briefings, and not returned.
