US Senate confirms Mike Pompeo Secretary of State

KEVIN DIETSCH/UPI/NewscomThe U.S. Senate voted this afternoon to confirm former CIA Director Mike Pompeo as the Trump administration's secretary of state. Joe Manchin (W.Va.), Heidi Heitkamp (N.D.) and Joe Donnelly (Ind.) ultimately supported his nomination.

Less than an hour after he was sworn in by Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito, he boarded a military plane for Belgium.

Mike Pompeo says he's "humbled by the responsibility" of serving as secretary of state as he departs on his first trip as America's top diplomat. "He has my trust". In his committee testimony on April 12, Pompeo said he was eager to discuss the accord - which he called a "critical and time-sensitive topic" - with allies in Brussels.

The panel's top Democrat, Bob Menendez of New Jersey, echoed the concerns of many Democrats, arguing the Pompeo is more suited for clandestine work than managing delicate worldwide relations. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) saved the newly confirmed secretary of state from that blemish. Pompeo will now replace Rex Tillerson at State but the opposition to his appointment was both unprecedented and shameful.

The White House has been underscoring Pompeo's readiness for the job, casting him as an already crucial member of Trump's foreign-policy circle.

I will not question the motives of any of my colleagues, my friends whom I respect; I will only say that things are surely different around the United States Senate nowadays than they were previously - when we rose up nearly unanimously and confirmed John Kerry and Hillary Clinton and stood for the proposition that a president of the United States is entitled to his or her team and that person needed strong support.

Susan B. Anthony List President Marjorie Dannenfelser said Pompeo has demonstrated a strong commitment to protecting human life.

The final votes are in and Mike Pompeo has now been confirmed as Secretary of State.

Mike Pompeo is a man of action and all indications are he plans to be out front as Secretary of State.

Pompeo secured support from 57 senators, with 42 voting no and one senator absent.

Mr Pompeo has been arranging a summit between Mr Trump and North Korea's leader Kim Jong-un.

Pompeo is expected to be sworn in nearly immediately.

A long list of pressing issues awaits him, including a decision on the Iran nuclear deal, Trump's upcoming summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and ongoing disagreements in the White House about the future USA role in Syria. "70th U.S. Secretary of State".

Pandering to the party's extreme left, leading Democrats have used Pompeo's personal views on homosexuality, same-sex marriage and Islamist extremism as an excuse not to support his confirmation.

"It's just too bad Director Pompeo's confirmation process has offered such a prime example of the historic partisan obstruction that my colleagues across the aisle are visiting on the Senate", he said.
