Active Fissures Spew Lava Near Hawaii's Kilauea Volcano

The destructive tear of this volcanic eruption isn't over yet.

Steam cracks are shown before a fissure opened on Kaupili Street in the Leilani Estates subdivision caused by an eruption of the Kilauea Volcano is shown following a series of earthquakes, in Hawaii on May 4, 2018.

Hawaii authorities asked lava watchers to keep away, saying, "This is not the time for sightseeing". "You can help tremendously by staying out of the area".

The rest of the island and state were conducting business as usual with no impact to flights to tourism centers, state officials said.

A new fissure erupts in Leilani Estates in Pahoa, Hawaii, on Saturday.

Hawaii County spokeswoman Janet Snyder says only one fissure has active lava flowing, though at last count a total of nine vents had opened up as of 9:30 p.m.

Volcanic activity continues on Kilauea's east rift zone, near Pahoa, Hawaii.

Hundreds of people have evacuated from Leilani Estates, a community of about 1,700 people, and Lanipuna Gardens.

But now they have another fear: frequent earthquakes after the eruption.

Puna has thick jungle as well as dark fields of lava rock from past eruptions.

Magno said authorities are working on a plan that would allow residents temporarily back in to retrieve additional belongings if conditions allowed. "You must be prepared to leave areas if required".

"Until we see quake activity dying down and the ground stops moving, it's likely that this activity is going to continue", said Tina Neal, a scientist in charge at the USGS Hawaii Volcano Observatory after a late-afternoon community meeting attended by about 300 people.

Raya added that holding this election will give hope to the institutions, thus alleviating the tensions among different parties. Sayyed was one of the most powerful men in Lebanon in the 15 years of Syrian domination that followed the 1975-90 civil war.

And such policies generally don't cover natural disaster damage.

The eruptions have released high levels of sulfur dioxide into the air, and the federal Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry says the gas can be life-threatening.

Breathing large amounts of sulfur dioxide can result in burning of the nose and throat, and breathing difficulties. Senior citizens, the young and people with respiratory issues are especially vulnerable to the gas, the state's Emergency Management Agency said. It's such a specialty and so infrequent, that it's not available, he said.

Jessica Gauthier, 47, said she and other local real estate agents had seen vacation renters cancel their reservations, though the volcanic activity is far from tourist centres. The two most recent fissures opened on Saturday night.

Brad Stanfill said the lava was more than 3 miles (5 kilometers) from his house but he was not allowed in because of a mandatory evacuation order. As the lava piled up and hardened it could clog other vents along the path.

"Now it's trying to figure out what the future brings".

"I'd have to start over at age 56".

"We knew we were building on an active volcano", she said, but added that she thought the danger from lava was a remote possibility.

"I was a critical care nurse for 37 years, so I understand the health implications and the dangers involved", McMillan said. "I didn't realize until this morning, I've got one pair of shoes". She later confirmed that lava had covered her entire property.

Neil Valentine and his family also left their home Thursday night in Leilani Estates.

That depends on the homeowner's insurance policy and how the home was damaged.

"I chose to stay because I wanted to experience this in my life", he said. But she never thought it would be a reality. "I'm just not one to rush off". She had bags packed with her clothes, important documents and whatever her dogs would need.
