In 2004, residents in Bangladesh also caught the infections after they ate contaminated fruits or consumed products such as raw date palm juice that were contaminated by saliva or urine of infected fruit bats.

Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare J.P. Nadda is closely monitoring the situation arising out of reported cases and deaths due to Nipah virus in Kerala. The virus, which is released through bats' saliva, urine and excreta, typically spreads due to bats consuming fruits on trees.

The government has convened an all-party meeting in Kozhikode on Friday to discuss the measures taken so far to contain the Nipah virus fever outbreak in north Kerala districts over the past one week.

A nurse who treated one of Moosa's sons also died, leaving a heart-wrenching note for her family.

The Nipah virus mystery deepened on Saturday as the samples collected from bats in Kerala's Kozhikode and Malappuram districts, where 13 people have died of the infection, have tested negative for the virus. A cluster of dead bats in Himachal Pradesh also caused a brief scare, but no human infections have been recorded in the state. "A few drivers did not want to carry the body to the crematorium even though we told them that they would not have to touch it", a relative reportedly said. "Take care of our children".

The Kerala cabinet on Wednesday made a decision to give Rs 10 lakh each to the sons of Lini, the nurse who died due to Nipah virus.

"The principal of the school and the students said that bats come here every year, and eventually perish, however, this year, their numbers are far greater than in previous years", Sharma said.

Specifically, it is the Greater Indian Fruit Bat, found abundantly across South Asia, which carries the Nipah virus.
