Astronaut Alan Bean Dies at 86

Astronaut Alan Bean Dies at 86

He flew into space on his first mission in 1969 aboard the Apollo 12 on NASA's second moon landing.

He then attended the US Navy's Test Pilot School and accumulated more than 5,500 hours of flying time in 27 different types of aircraft.

Bean became an accomplished artist after his retirement in 1981, painting scene from his space explorations.

Leslie Bean, Alan Bean's wife of 40 years, said her husband was the strongest and kindest man she ever knew.

Astronaut-artist Alan Bean speaks at the 2009 opening of an exhibit titled "Alan Bean: Painting Apollo, First Artist on Another World" at the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum in Washington. "He was the love of my life and I miss him dearly", Bean's widow, Leslie Bean, said in a statement.

Bean spent 69 days, 15 hours and 45 minutes in space, including 31 hours and 31 minutes on the moon's surface. He was one of 14 trainees selected by NASA for its third group of astronauts in October 1963.

Mr. Bean commanded the second of three flights to the Skylab orbiting laboratory, working with Jack R. Lousma of the Marine Corps and Owen K. Garriott, a scientist-astronaut, on a mission that studied the Earth's makeup and the sun's atmosphere.

Mr Schmitt, a lunar module pilot for Apollo 17, said the specimens Mr Bean brought back to Earth were "a scientific gift that keeps on giving today and in the future".

It has even said it will pay compensation if it fails to hit the capacity targets the two retailers have agreed. Kroger says that it is already looking for three locations to build automated delivery warehouses in 2018.

Many of Mr. Bean's fellow astronauts were evidently taken aback by his choosing the art world over private business.

Mr Bean said in 1998 that he had wanted to be a pilot "ever since I could remember".

"I think of myself not as an astronaut who paints", he added, "but as an artist who was once an astronaut".

"I wanted to be courageous, even though I wasn't fearless at the time".

"He was a one-of-a-kind combination of technical achievement as an astronaut and artistic achievement as a painter", said Massimino, who flew on two space shuttle missions.

His Apollo-themed paintings feature canvases textured with lunar boot prints and embedded with small pieces of his moon dust-stained mission patches. His trips to space prompted his surprise turn of career. I am so grateful he was my mentor and friend, and I will miss him terribly.

He is survived by his wife, a sister and two children from a prior marriage, a daughter Amy Sue and son, Clay.
