Central American 'Caravan' Migrants to Seek Asylum at US-Mexico Border

About 200 people in a caravan of Central American asylum seekers waited on the Mexican border with San Diego for a second straight day on Monday to turn themselves in to US border inspectors, who said the nation's busiest crossing facility did not have enough space to accommodate them.

Before the group arrived, US Customs and Border Protection officials said the port had already reached full capacity, and migrants trying to get into the United States may need to wait in Mexico as officials process those already in the facility.

Reacting to news that the group reached the USA border over the weekend, Trump tweeted Monday that the group is "openly defying our border".

FACT: These migrants are seeking asylum, which allows people fleeing persecution to live legally in a different country.

At the sea-washed gates of the world's most-powerful nation, the president's opponents said they wanted to see a United States built on compassion not hostility. I find it ridiculous that any time there is an issue in the US, immigrants get scapegoated, they get mistreated, they get criminalized just for existing.

KAHN: Undeterred, the large group in two parallel lines marched to the border crossing, chanting, yes, we can, yes, we can.

But whether the US plans to offer asylum remains unclear.

Clockwise from top left: People gather on both sides of the border as the last members of the caravan from Central America arrive.

"Mexico is doing very little, if not NOTHING, at stopping people from flowing into Mexico through their Southern Border, and then into the U.S., They laugh at our dumb immigration laws". "One of the most richest governments on the planet".

Unfortunately for them, ending the practice is not now possible under US law. "As of the rest of the people, we have about 20 youths who identify as LGBT and about 400 women".

MYTH: These migrants are from Mexico. Unaccompanied children must be released to the Office of Refugee Resettlement, and the mothers can not usually be locked up with their kids for longer than three weeks due to a federal court order.

One rejected migrant blamed the USA government for failing "to get sufficient agents and resources" to process the refugees. And immigrants who get picked up within the interior of the country often qualify for bond hearings.

The Department of Justice has filed complaints against 11 individuals believed to be members of the Central American migrant caravan, accusing them of illegally entering the United States, a federal law enforcement official tells CNN. In 2016, two-thirds of asylum-seekers from Mexico, El Salvador, Honduras, and Guatemala, had their cases denied.

During a Saturday night rally in Washington, Michigan, he railed against the caravan as proof that the country's laws were too lax.

"It's overkill", Thompson told HuffPost. "We just loaded stuff from home into our auto and we came, and brought them for all the kids". They're 100 percent still coming. US Attorney General Jeff Sessions has called it: "A deliberate attempt to undermine our laws and overwhelm our system".

It's unclear what practical consequences any of these threats will have.

"Now that our journey is ending, we demand that our rights as refugees, migrants and human beings be respected", the group said in a statement.

On April 23, he reiterated the statement, shining a spotlight on the caravan aided by Pueblo Sin Fronteras, a nonprofit group. Just a take a look at some of the ledes.

This is a developing story.
