Dumoulin won the cutting in Jerusalem

Defending champion Tom Dumoulin claimed the overall lead at the Giro d'Italia Friday as the Dutchman won the opening time trial in Jerusalem.

The 32-year-old, who is aiming to become the third rider to win a third successive Grand Tour, was on a recce for the 9.7km time trial in Jerusalem.

The four-time Tour de France champion, racing for Team Sky, begins his Giro attempt at 14:41 BST. He appeared to also have an abrasion on the right side of his body.

With so much talk about his adverse test for asthma drug salbutamol at last year's Vuelta and whether he should even be here, the start of the race was meant to bring some respite.

Game two of the best-of-seven-series is in Boston on Thursday before the next two in Philadelphia. "He's been great all year". With the perimeter shooting the Sixers are capable of, Rozier also has to continue to harass on the defensive end.

Team Sky coach Nicolas Portal told Eurosport that Froome's front wheel slid at low speed during the first lap of training but that the accident would not prevent the British rider from competing. "It's going to be a painful TT for him but he is fine".

The second stage Saturday will see the riders start in the northern port city of Haifa and ride 167 kilometres south along the coast to the finish in Tel Aviv.

Froome is looking to make history by winning the first major race to ever take place outside of Europe.

Fabio Sabatini (Quick-Step Floors) had the honour of starting the race but it was his young teammate Remi Cavanga who set the quickest time early in the day with a time of 12.37.
