Eurovision Has Blocked China From Watching This Year's Contest

Albania's entry saw singer Eugent Bushpepa bear tattoos on his arms during a performance of the song Mall, and Ireland's Ryan O'Shaughnessy's efforts on Together saw a same-sex couple dancing - prompting them to cut said songs from their televised broadcast due to the country's broadcast policies.

Rainbow flags seen in the audience during Switzerland's performance were also blurred out.

LGBT culture remains taboo in China's entertainment industry where same-sex relationships are banned from television screens and gay content is forbidden on online streaming platforms.

The EBU released a statement saying: "On the 9th of May, Chinese broadcaster Mango TV broadcast the first Semi-Final of the 2018 Eurovision Song Contest live but two performances were censored".

The EBU announced on Friday the termination of its contract with China's MangoTV, preventing it from broadcasting Thursday's second semi-final and Saturday's grand final hosted in Lisbon, Portugal.

This Is How Ayew Borther's Swansea City Can Escape Relegation
Swansea City are 17th on log sheet with 33 points minus 27 goals, while Southampton are 16th with 36 points minus 18 goals. Swansea's manager Carlos Carvalhal can only hopes the champions have one more exceptional 90 minutes in them.

Homosexuality was decriminalised in China more than two decades ago but conservative attitudes still prevail in many parts of the country. However, there are Chinese Eurovision fans out there and the number is growing. There has also been a crackdown on tattoos, with media regulators censoring actors who are inked.

Other Weibo users called for people to "boycott Mango TV", and one user said they "absolutely won't be watching Mango TV next month".

O'Shaughnessy (25), from Skerries in Co Dublin, said he welcomed the EBU's decision "because from the very start we have just said love is love".

Portugal is also through to the finals, since Portuguese singer Salvador Sobral won the contest previous year.

'I think it's a really important decision by the EBU, they haven't taken it lightly, and I think it's a move in the right direction - I'm happy about it'. It features two male dancers.
