FCC: Net neutrality rules ending in June

Fifty senators signed the petition to reverse the repeal of net neutrality, including all 48 Democrats, one independent, and one Republican.

To force action on Markey's CRA, Senate Democrats filed a discharge petition on Wednesday, setting up a vote that Markey says should take place next week. Net neutrality would prevent broadband providers from blocking or slowing web traffic.

However, if the Senate manages to repeal the measure, this initiative is not likely to pass the Republican-controlled House of Representatives or to survive a veto by President Donald Trump. The audio is below. Recipients, including people who have been here for twenty years and the parents of over 50,000 American-born children, will now have to choose between remaining in the U.S. without legal status or returning to one of the world's most unsafe countries. After hearing arguments for and against using the CRA to restore net neutrality, 58 percent of voters oppose its use for this goal, and only 38 percent support it.

"By passing this resolution, we can send a clear message that this Congress won't fall to the special-interest agenda of President Trump and his broadband baron allies, but rather we'll do right by the people who sent us here", Markey said during a news conference Wednesday.

Congress will vote next week to bring back net neutrality. Advocates believe the Senate will vote before the end of next week.

Net neutrality opponents argue that there's no reason to prohibit any of that stuff. This process would allow Congress to overturn the FCC's order with a simple majority while bypassing any constructive debate or discussion.

"Now, on June 11, these unnecessary and harmful internet regulations will be repealed and the bipartisan, light-touch approach that served the online world well for almost 20 years will be restored", Ajit Pai, chairman of the FCC, said in a statement Thursday. ISPs, they note, have invested a lot of money in building high-speed communications networks that deliver the internet to our homes and businesses.

Unfortunately, manufactured controversy often gets more attention in Washington than real solutions.

Ajit Pai was a vocal critic of net neutrality even before he became the FCC Chairman.

However they are not alone as many tech companies have since stepped forward announcing their support for net neutrality.

Republicans have said the FCC repeal would eliminate heavy-handed government regulations, encourage investment and return the internet to pre-2015 rules. Instead of a band-aid approach offered by the CRA, by a 20-point margin voters reject the use of the CRA to restore net neutrality.
