Pyongyang is seemingly open to agreeing to their release in relation to an impending summit between North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and US President Donald Trump regarding the rogue state's nuclear program.

However, Seoul wants the troops to stay because USA forces in South Korea play the role of a mediator in military confrontations between neighboring superpowers like China and Japan, another presidential official told reporters on condition of anonymity earlier on Wednesday.

But North Korea for decades has been pushing a concept of "denuclearization" that bears no resemblance to the American definition, vowing to pursue nuclear development unless Washington removes its troops and the nuclear umbrella defending South Korea and Japan.

China's foreign minister congratulated North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on Thursday on his moves to reduce tensions with South Korea, China said.
