Guatemala opens embassy in Jerusalem, two days after USA move

On Monday morning, across Gaza, a tiny Mediterranean strip that has been suffocatingly blockaded by Israel and Egypt for years, loudspeakers urged Palestinians to rush to the border with Israel and protest. In the ceremony which was held on Wednesday, Morales said that Guatemala was bringing a message of "love, peace and fraternity" to Israel.

Putin and Erdogan also discussed the Syrian settlement and Russian-Turkish cooperation in the energy sector.

The May 14 opening ceremony of the new United States embassy in Jerusalem sparked mass protests among Palestinians and caused clashes on the border between Israel and the Gaza Strip, which killed over 60 Palestinians and left around 3,000 injured. Dozens of protesters had already been killed before Monday's incidents.

Meanwhile, In a similar development, The Palestinian Authority has also recalled its envoys to Romania, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Austria after their ambassadors attended an Israeli reception marking the United States embassy's move to Jerusalem.

Israel celebrated the opening of Guatemala's new embassy in Jerusalem on Wednesday as the Palestinians, infuriated by the relocation of the U.S. Embassy to the contested city, recalled their ambassadors to four European countries that had supported the move.

The embassy move aggravated the conflict between Palestinians and Israel.

Israel, with U.S. backing, says Hamas is behind the protests, deliberately provoking violence for propaganda aims.

Khalil al-Hayyah, the deputy leader of Hamas, said at a news conference in Gaza City that Hamas would continue its protests at the border.

On Wednesday, Guatemala followed the US lead, festively opening its new Jerusalem mission with Guatemalan President Jimmy Morales saying his country was bringing a message of "love, peace and fraternity" to Israel.

In a Friday sermon two weeks ago, Mahmoud Habbash, a senior adviser to PA President Mahmoud Abbas, lambasted Hamas for sending children to the Gaza border to violently confront Israeli soldiers.

The ministry said in a written statement that it expressed discomfort to Deniz over alleged mistreatment during the departure from Turkey of Eitan Na'eh, Israel's ambassador to Ankara.

"We are making a sand barrier so people can feel a bit safer", one of the men said, declining to give his name.

Israel occupied the West Bank and east Jerusalem in 1967 and later annexed east Jerusalem in a move never recognised by the global community.

Omar Shakir, the local director for Human Rights Watch, said that under worldwide law, Israel can not use lethal force against unarmed protesters, regardless of their identity or possible affiliation with a militant group. Palestinian officials say the vast majority of the casualties have been unarmed protesters. Palestinians hope to gain part of Jerusalem as the capital of a future state.

"Hamas is pushing people with a view of a massive infiltration into Israel, openly declaring their goal is to destroy Israel", Netanyahu said.

Israel has rejected criticism over Monday's violence, with the United States strongly backing its ally and blaming Hamas for the deaths.
