Hawaii residents shaken by tremors, brace for new lava outbreaks

"Federal funding is available to the state and eligible local governments and certain private nonprofit organizations on a cost-sharing basis for emergency work and the fix or replacement of facilities damaged by the Kilauea volcanic eruption and earthquakes in Hawaii County", FEMA said in the release.

Neal said fresher, hotter lava could emerge because magma has been moving down Kilauea's rift zone toward the area where the volcano is erupting.

A quake last Friday was measured at magnitude 6.9, the most powerful to hit the islands since 1975.

"Because the lava intrusion is still active and earthquakes are still occurring, we still think there's a decent chance of new eruptive activity at the surface", Steven Brantley said.

The news comes as more Hawaiians near the volcano prepare for evacuations. The resulting explosion can blast rock and ash for miles.

He said that the body was doing its job and will continue to do so in unveiling corruption in the country. Mr Sharif has dismissed the corruption charges as politically motivated.

But experts said there was a continuing threat that the lava could drop below the water table.

Hannique Ruder, a 65-year-old resident living in the Leilani Estates subdivision, walks past the mound of hardened lava while surveying the neighborhood Friday, May 11, 2018, near Pahoa, Hawaii.

On May 3, the Kilauea volcano erupted forcing almost 2,000 people out of their homes and destroying dozens of buildings. The volcano observatory reports the fissure - the 16th to appear since last week - opened east of the Puna Geothermal Venture plant, but no significant lava flow has been reported so far.

The Hawaii National Guard is prepared, with only 90-minutes notice, to rescue some 2,000 people by ground convoy in troop-carrying vehicles and, if necessary, in Blackhawk or Chinook helicopters.

Another lava vent has opened on Hawaii's Big Island as the United States authorities warn of a possible explosive eruption of the island's Kilauea volcano, the Hawaii County Civil Defense said. The recent volcanic activity in Hawaii has also caused countless earthquakes, including a magnitude 6.9 natural disaster on May 4m which was the strongest quake to strike Hawaii since 1975. Lava flows from the volcano, one of five on the island, have buried an area about 125 square kilometers, according to the USGS.
