Hawaii volcano shoots lava into sky; evacuations ordered

Kilauea is a now active shield volcano in the Hawaiian Islands and the most active of the five volcanoes that together form the island of Hawaiʻi.

Gov. David Ige said he's activated the Hawaii National Guard to help with evacuations and security.

The eruption comes in the wake of some moderate natural disaster activity in recent days.

Volcano experts said the quakes were being caused by a river of rising magma flowing down toward Puna, extending east (and possibly even under Highway 130).

The US Geological Survey said no steam or heat were seen escaping from the cracks, and they were small - about several inches across.

Fortunately, mandatory evacuation notices combined with warnings from government officials over the previous few days meant that everybody was evacuated safely with no injuries. It's an orange level warning, which is the second highest and is characterized as "Volcano is exhibiting heightened unrest with increased likelihood of eruption, or, Volcanic eruption underway with no or minor ash emission".

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, there were almost 70 earthquakes of magnitude 2.5 or stronger from Tuesday to Wednesday.

Residents from Puna to Hilo said they felt the temblor, the biggest in recent days to hit Hawaii Island, which has been rattled with hundreds of small earthquakes since last week. His wife, Stella, then received a call from an official who told them to get out immediately.

"This is our retirement dream", Henry Calio said. They have also reported cracks in roads.

Lava emerges from the ground after Kilauea Volcano erupted. Nearly 4,000 acres of land were covered in lava as a result.

Earlier in the week, the crater floor of the Puu Oo vent collapsed.

A view of a so-called "skylight", a crack in the surface of solidified lava, taken during a Paradise Helicopters flight over the area allows a view on the hot glowing magma in an underground tube near the Pu'u 'O'o crater on the Hawaii island. Leilani Estates appeared to be at greatest risk, but scientists said new vents and outbreaks could occur and it's not possible to say where. Civil defense authorities closed the area to visitors and ordered private tour companies to stop taking people into the region.

Another resident, Ikaika Marzo, told Hawaii News Now that he saw "fountains" of lava as high as 125 feet (38 meters). In the decades since, the lava flow has buried dozens of square miles of land and destroyed many homes.
