Jared Kushner's security clearance restored

Son-in-law and adviser to the president Jared Kushner regained his security clearance Wednesday, a source familiar with the matter told CNN.

The FBI background check on Kushner dragged as questions arose whether special counsel Robert Mueller's probe of Russian interference in the election and any collusion by Trump campaign aides turned up evidence that he was a security threat, the New York Times reported.

"His application was properly submitted, reviewed by career officials, and went through the normal process", said Lowell. His clearance was suspended in February, however, as the White House faced blowback over the Rob Porter scandal.

"A year ago, Jared was one of the first to voluntarily cooperate with any investigation into the 2016 campaign and related topics", said Lowell, Kushner's lawyer. "Having completed these processes, Mr. Kushner is looking forward to continuing the work the president has asked him to do".

Kushner had been working under an interim clearance, but it was revoked in February during procedural changes in the White House.

Jared Kushner walks out after President Trump spoke at the White House on May 18. But attorney Edward MacMahon, who specializes in national security matters, suggested that the FBI would not have signed off on such a clearance if Kushner was a target of a ongoing criminal investigation.

European Union launches economic plan to save Iran nuclear deal
In the short term, she said, the European Union should focus on diplomacy and reaffirm its positions on the Iran deal. Merkel said the Europeans aren't "blind" to threats posed by Iran's activities in Syria to Israel, for example.

After it became clear that Kushner had actually met with many foreign officials during the presidential campaign, however, he amended his form to reflect more than 100 contacts.

When Trump took office previous year, Kushner was granted interim clearance which allowed him to handle classified information while his background check was ongoing.

Kushner's months-long inability to get a permanent security clearance had long vexed the administration, so much so that some officials felt unwilling to push the issue with others in similar straits.

Kushner's initial SF-86 form did not mention any foreign contacts, though he quickly supplemented it to indicate that he would provide that information.

Kushner's security clearance reinstatement comes after a second meeting he had with Mueller in April, in which he answered questions for seven hours.
