John McCain Urges Senate to Reject Gina Haspel for CIA Director

Haspel promised to work closely with the committee if she is confirmed.

If confirmed, Haspel said she will follow the legal framework the U.S. has since imposed that bans any tactic not spelled out in the Army Field Manual. Trump tweeted following her confirmation hearing, after previously applauding her for being tough on terror.

Haspel is giving her opening remarks at a hearing before the Senate intelligence committee.

In excerpts of the opening remarks Ms Haspel will make on Wednesday, she has vowed that the Central Intelligence Agency will not restart any such detention centre.

"My only loyalty is to the American people and the Constitution", Haspel said. "I would absolutely not permit it".

"As a candidate, President Trump repeatedly expressed his support for waterboarding".

"I believe Gina Haspel is a patriot who loves our country and has devoted her professional life to its service and defense", he said.

The Center for Constitutional Rights and retired general and flag officers of the US military also wrote to express their concern about Haspel's nomination.

"Ms Haspel's role in overseeing the use of torture by Americans is disturbing", McCain said in a statement. Haspel remained stone-faced as police escorted them out of the room.

Haspel's ties to the interrogation program led to a contentious confirmation hearing on Wednesday in which Senate Democrats drilled down on her views on the subject.

"In my view - a view shared by all nine former directors and acting directors - the CIA was able to collect valuable intelligence that contributed to the prevention of further terrorist attacks". "For me, there is no better example of implementing lessons learned than what the agency took away from the detention and interrogation programme".

"I know that those who used enhanced interrogation methods and those who approved them wanted to protect Americans from harm".

Obviously, I grew up in Barcelona, and when I watch them play I want them to win. "There's a good spirit, a good basis. I will wait until they make the decision and then after support the guy to do well.

The request includes an attachment called "Additional Facts, Law and Argument in Support", which includes the six paragraphs, the New York Times reported.

This is keeping the messy details out of the public debate on Haspel.

Senators want to know from Gina Haspel what she would do if President Donald Trump ordered her to waterboard a detainee.

The nominee, who said she has no social-media accounts, said she was introducing herself to the American people after spending "over 30 years under cover and in the shadows". She would later return, attending the University of Kentucky and graduating from the University of Louisville. While her family has deep roots there, she grew up as an Air Force "brat", following her father to postings all over the world.

Many Democrats have spoken out against her nomination. She met her first foreign agent on a dark, moonless night at an undisclosed location overseas.

"I'm very confident about that", she added. "It was the beginning of an adventure I had only dreamed of". They cited her role in prisoner torture during the George W. Bush administration. "They use unfair trade and other practices to undermine our industrial and technical base", Mr. Rubio said.

Haspel, 61, also made it clear she relished the classic spywork she engaged in earlier in her career. The 2011 memo that the CIA released summarizes a disciplinary review conducted by then-CIA Deputy Director Mike Morell.

Ms Haspel invoked the historical marker she would achieve as the agency's first female director.

"I would not restart, under any circumstances, an interrogation program at CIA", Haspel said when pressed by Sens. Mark Warner of Virginia and Dianne Feinstein of California, said some of her answers lacked clarity.

She says, "we don't have interrogators and we don't have interrogation expertise".

Her opponents outside Congress lashed out.

Collins, a Republican, and King, an independent who caucuses with Democrats, both issued statements Wednesday evening following Haspel's private meeting the Senate Intelligence Committee, on which King and Collins both serve.
