LIST: Big Bend counties declare states of emergency

Subtropical Storm Alberto - the first named storm of the 2018 hurricane season - prompted Florida, Alabama and MS to launch emergency preparations Saturday. A Storm Surge Watch has also been issued for sections of the Nature Coast north of Crystal River.

Residents can expect gusty wind near the coast, isolated tornados and localized flooding from heavy rainfall, the advisory says. The hurricane centre said up to 12 inches of rain was possible across the Florida Keys and southern and southwestern Florida.

The National Weather Service has issued a flood watch from Sunday evening until Monday morning for the northern two-thirds of the state.

Maximum sustained winds are near 50 miles per hour with higher gusts.

His Mississippi and Alabama counterparts also declared states of emergency, citing the threat of coastal and inland flooding from storm rains.

Alberto won't totally wash out our Memorial Day here in the Tennessee Valley.

According to an update from the NHC, the center of the storm is predicted to reach warning areas on the U.S. Gulf Coast Sunday night or early Monday, but heavy rainfall and tropical storm conditions will reach the area ahead of the storm's center.

The governors of Florida, Alabama and MS all declared states of emergency ahead of the storm. The storm now has maximum sustained winds of almost 50 miles per hour. Little change in strength is expected before Alberto reaches the northern Gulf Coast. Alberto is now located about 165 miles west of Tampa.

The Florida Panhandle has been issued with a mandatory evacuation notice, affecting some 4,200 housing units, while Taylor County, to the east has a voluntary evacuation order in place for its coastal areas.

All eyes are on the Gulf of Mexico as Alberto tracks northward toward the Florida panhandle.

Alberto comes after a series of deadly hurricanes in the United States and Caribbean previous year that walloped places including Texas, Florida and Puerto Rico, causing hundreds of billions of dollars in damage, massive power outages and devastation to hundreds of thousands of structures.

Storms in the Gulf are closely watched because 5 percent of US natural gas and 17 percent of crude-oil production comes out of the region, according to the Energy Information Administration. The storm was moving north at about 14 miles per hour, he added, "so not real fast".

At 2 a.m. EDT Sunday, the National Hurricane Center in Miami said Alberto was about 380 miles (615 kilometers) south of Apalachicola, Florida, and moving north-northeast at 13 mph (20 kph).

Please be prepared for possible areas of flooding and loss of electricity.

The NWS said waves as high as 5.5 metres could pound the popular Gulf beaches in Baldwin County, Ala., and northwestern Florida on Monday.
