NASA Announces It is Sending a Helicopter to Mars in 2020

The Agency notes that during the first helicopter flight on the surface of Mars aircraft will have to stay in the air for at least 30 seconds, while on the three-meter height.

The Mars 2020 rover will have a mission of its own - including seeking signs of life for two years and using instruments to help NASA learn more about how to safely land humans there.

NASA said the blades of the small helicopter, which has a softball-sized fuselage, would maintain an RPM of almost 3,000, about 10 times that of helicopters on Earth.

Soviet scientists dropped two balloons into the atmosphere of Venus in the 1980s.

"Exploring the Red Planet with NASA's Mars Helicopter exemplifies a successful marriage of science and technology innovation and is a unique opportunity to advance Mars exploration for the future", said Thomas Zurbuchen, Associate Administrator for NASA. "We don't have a pilot and Earth will be several light-minutes away, so there is no way to joystick this mission in real time", said Mimi Aung, the Mars Helicopter project manager at Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in the statement.

On Friday NASA officials confirmed that they are planning to fly a light and small helicopter to Mars.

"NASA has a proud history of firsts", said NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine in a statement.

The helicopter is supposed to be used to achieve points on the surface of Mars, where you will not be able to get the Rover. The tiny helicopter will test the capabilities for controlled flight in the thin atmosphere of Mars and is also expected to pave the way for future uses across the solar system. After placing the helicopter on earth, the rover is going to be told to drive to a safe space to relay orders.

The exploratory mission is scheduled to launch in July 2020.

Once on the surface, the six-wheeled rover will deploy the small chopper in a suitable location, allowing it to charge its batteries and run through a variety of pre-flight tests before making history in the thin Martin atmosphere. Mars is about 20 light minutes away from Earth.

Once the copter is ready to go, a 30-day test flight campaign will commence, beginning with a simple hover in place and leading to more extensive reconnaissance missions lasting as long as 90 seconds.

In two years, a new USA rover is set to visit Mars.
