New home secretary Sajid Javid steps up: I'll sort Windrush

New home secretary Sajid Javid steps up: I'll sort Windrush

In January, India's Minister of State for Home Affairs, Kiren Rijiju, signed an agreement with Britain on the swift return of Indian illegal immigrants from the United Kingdom, an issue that has been repeatedly raised by British government officials to their Indian counterparts.

In addition to dealing with the fallout from the Windrush scandal, Mr Javid will have to address concerns about increasing gun and knife crime in England and WalesHe will also need to finalise the Government's refreshed counter-terrorism strategy - expected in the coming weeks.

Because they haven't been able to gather the extensive paperwork required to prove that they are allowed to live here, some of those in what is known as the Windrush generation, named after the ship that brought the first wave of Caribbean immigrants to Britain after World War II, have been threatened with deportation, have been denied health benefits or have lost jobs.

Rudd had claimed to a parliamentary committee that her department did not impose targets, but the Guardian reported on Sunday that in a private letter to May in 2017, she had informed the Prime Minister that she meant to boost deportations by 10%.

No 10 explained how a trawl of documents over the weekend to help prepare the Home Secretary for a Commons statement on Monday had mentioned officials' "operational targets", which she had been unaware of, and so, accepting she had unintentionally misled Parliament, had resigned in a phonecall to the PM. The prime minister today said that deportation targets were in place while she was home secretary.

As a second generation migrant, he said he was "angry" at the treatment of those caught up in the saga.

But moving Sajid Javid in, after Amber Rudd took herself out, does not end the prime minister's problems.

Immigration is a divisive issue in Britain, and reducing the number of newcomers was a major factor for many voters who in 2016 backed leaving the European Union.

But his appointment did lift the spirits of pro-Brexit campaigners, who said Javid would press their arguments in May's cabinet, unlike Rudd, who was seen as pro-EU and a supporter of keeping the closest possible ties with the bloc.

Mr Javid also delivered a fiery riposte to shadow home secretary Diane Abbott, who asked if he was aware of the strength of feeling over the Windrush scandal, telling the Labour frontbencher that she "doesn't have a monopoly" on anger.

However, many never formalised their status, often because they were children who came over on their parents' passports and then never applied for their own.

May apologized to Caribbean leaders for any "anxiety" caused by the records destruction, which occurred when she was Home Secretary under the previous administration.

Sajid Javid is yet to announce the specifics of any changes he'll make to the immigration policy.

The powers the House of Lords is demanding to be given a greater say over the final Brexit deal could force the government back to the negotiating table, and could even be used to halt Britain's departure.

He was replaced as Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government by former Northern Ireland secretary James Brokenshire, who has recently returned to Westminster after treatment for cancer.
