Nobel Prize for literature postponed in wake of sex scandal

The Nobel Prize in literature will not be awarded this year following sex-abuse allegations and other issues that have affected the public image of the Swedish Academy that selects the victor.

The Swedish Academy said on Friday that it will not name the victor of this year's Nobel Literature Prize. And it is perhaps to be expected that of the various bodies which award Nobel Prizes, a sexual harassment scandal would kick off in a body which is (as with Hollywood) concerned with the arts, with their informal systems of patronage and back-scratching, rather than, say, regarding the Nobel Prize for Chemistry, in which one either has developed cryo-electron microscopy or one has not. The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences awards the prizes for physics, chemistry and economics, while the Nobel Assembly awards the medicine prize.

Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Lofven said the decision was "regrettable" due to the prize's prestige, and he feared Sweden's reputation could take a knock.

The decision does not affect the other Nobel prizes, which are awarded separately.

Relatives of academy members have also alleged sexual harassment by Arnault. After Katarina Frostenson, Arnault's wife, was removed from the institution's committee in response to the allegations, a number of other members vowed to give up their active memberships, even though they are not allowed to resign.

Sara Danius, the academy's permanent secretary, was ousted from her position earlier this year, which many claimed was a result of her efforts to investigate the matter. Some members also quit over Frostenson staying on board, per the Times.

There has also been a crackdown on tattoos, with media regulators censoring actors who are inked. Rainbow flags seen in the audience during Switzerland's performance were also blurred out.

"We find it necessary to commit time to recovering public confidence in the academy before the next laureate can be announced", permanent secretary Anders Olsson said.

In a damning statement last week following an investigation, the secretive institution acknowledged in a news release that it was "in a state of crisis following a period of strong disagreement between members over important issues". Its inception followed the death of Alfred Nobel in 1896.

The decision was reached at a meeting in Stockholm with the 2018 prize to be given in 2019.

Divisions started to emerge last November when French photographer Jean-Claude Arnault, who ran a cultural project with funding from the Swedish Academy, was accused by 18 women of sexual assault.

Though the academy has courted controversy in the past, for example, by awarding the 2016 prize to American singer-songwriter Bob Dylan, debate has mainly focused on literary merit rather than the institution itself.

Apparently no stranger to these backdoor shenanigans, Mr. Arnault has subsequently also been accused of leaking the names of winners of the Nobel Prize in Literature ahead of time. The prize was postponed on seven previous occasions, six of which occurred during World War I and II. American playwright Eugene O'Neill was awarded the 1936 prize a year later, in 1937, at the same time as that year's victor received his prize.
