Paris stabbings investigated as terror attack, claimed by Islamic State

Paris police tweeted that the attack occurred Saturday evening in the 2nd arrondissement or district of the French capital.

Local police said four people were wounded and one victim was killed in the attack near the city's famed Opera Garnier.

The Islamic State group has claimed responsibility for a deadly knife attack carried out in central Paris late Saturday, according to the SITE monitoring group.

Prosecutor Francois Molins said counterterrorism authorities were leading the investigation on potential charges of murder and attempted murder in connection with terrorist motives.

Police union representative Rocco Contento told Reuters that the assailant then rushed at police officers shouting "I will kill you, I will kill you!", before being shot dead.

France "will not yield an inch to the enemies of freedom", President Emmanuel Macron said shortly after the attack, praising police officers for "neutralizing the terrorist". "They encircled him and he tried to attack them with a knife but they shot him down", he told reporters. The Islamic State group claimed he was one of their soldiers.

Five minutes later there was a second scare and customers blocked the door of the restaurant for fear the attacker had slipped inside.

"Just before 9pm, we saw people rushing inside the restaurant screaming that a man was inside with a bloody knife, ' a witness called Laurent told Le Parisien newspaper".

Prime Minister Edouard Philippe said it took police less than nine minutes to subdue the attacker from the moment they were alerted. The statement also said the assailant acted in response to calls to attack anti-ISIS coalition countries. He tweeted, "My first thoughts are for the victims in this odious attack".

No information on the identity of the attacker was given.
