Revolution sweeps Armenian opposition leader into power

Armenia's governing Republican Party will provide the additional votes needed to elect a prime minister during a parliamentary vote on Tuesday, a Republican Party lawmaker told Reuters.

Crowds of villagers poured onto the streets to greet Pashinyan, offering him fresh bread and berries, as he travelled to rallies across the country.

It has been an unlikely rise to power in the post-Soviet republic of about three million for the former newspaper editor. In a concession last week, the Republicans agreed to support any prime minister candidate nominated by a third of the parliament members, paving the way for Pashinian's election.

Before his resignation, Sargsyan was appointed prime minister last month after serving 10 years as the country's president.

His protest movement began with a march of non-violence on March 31, demanding Sargsyan to step down.

Sargsyan was elected as prime minister on April 17.

"Military cooperation with Russian Federation is an important factor in ensuring our country's security", Pashinyan said, referring to a two-decade long conflict his country is locked in with neighbouring Azerbaijan.

The party that holds the majority of seats in Armenia's parliament says it now considers itself the opposition and won't cooperate with the new government. His auto was blown up in an apparent assassination attempt in 2004, and in 2008 he spent months in hiding after being accused of instigating political protests that ended with 10 people dead.

He has publicly fallen out with other opposition leaders such as the former president Levon Ter-Petrosyan.

Pashinyan promised that there would be no "total rejection of reforms and programs of the former government". Mr Sargsyan called the demand "political blackmail" and walked out of negotiations.

The founder and head of Civil Contract party and lawmaker from the Yelk bloc, Pashinyan led the street campaign, which saw hundreds of thousands of Armenians taking to the streets in massive protests in the past several weeks. To be elected, a candidate must garner at least 53 votes.

At the same time, the politician stated that he would not engage in a "personnel pogrom" in the system of state administration. "And for me, my goal isn't to become prime minister".

Also, he again ruled out major changes in Armenian foreign policy.
