Solo: A Star Wars Story has disappointing opening weekend

Some skeptics may claim that the sour "Solo" box office points to Star Wars fatigue, but the true test of that won't come for almost 19 months, when J.J. Abrams's "Star Wars: Episode IX", the final installment of Disney's first main trilogy, opens right before Christmas. The movie sold $14.1 million in Thursday preview ticket sales, which is a record for the Thursday before Memorial Day Weekend.

The estimated four-day take of $US101 million over the Memorial Day weekend in the USA was around $US30 million less than most pundits predicted.

Solo: A Star Wars Story, the latest prequel in the hugely popular film franchise, struggled to achieve escape velocity this holiday weekend, with an estimated US$101 million four-day take falling far below expectations. Three-day opening estimates are now sitting at $82 million, well below the $108.4 million "Revenge of the Sith" made in its first weekend.

Even before this weekend, it was considered a tall order for "Solo" to hit $1 billion worldwide the way the last three "Star Wars" films have done in the holiday season.

Disney has proved they are not messing up a golden opportunity when they replaced directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller with Ron Howard after initial reactions to the project were bad. Alden Ehrenreich plays the title role, joined by Emilia Clarke as first love Qi'ra, Joonas Suotamo as trusty sidekick Chewbacca, and Donald Glover as fellow rogue Lando Calrissian. But it only became a reality when Disney purchased Lucasfilm in 2012. To say Solo: A Star Wars Story must somehow win those very fans back would be an even bigger understatement.

In Solo: A Star Wars Story, L3-37 is a progressive, self-made droid who has upgraded and improved herself with scraps of other droids. "Marvel [likewise owned by Disney] has proven time and time again you can release movies year-in-and-year-out, but they are dealing with a cast of all-new characters for the most part, while sprinkling in old favorites here and there". It's the only Star Wars movie of the Disney era not to receive an A.

Harvey Weinstein Arrested On Rape, Criminal Sex Act Charges
Just last week, actress Asia Aregento spoke about what she says was her experience with Weinstein at the Cannes Film Festival. However, it is not clear as of now whether the charges, expected on Friday, will include money mishandling allegations.

However, the film was generally praised by critics when reviews first came out.

To put that in perspective, Deadpool 2's domestic debut weekend was $125m, and Avengers: Infinity War's was an incredible $250m (the biggest of all time).

Hollis even admitted that impressive global box office returns aren't enough t save it.

"I think Disney got caught milking the Star Wars franchise a little too much", a source told Deadline.
