'Solo: A Star Wars Story' Review: Prepare for an Unexpectedly Bold Adventure

'Solo: A Star Wars Story' Review: Prepare for an Unexpectedly Bold Adventure

Yes, Solo: A Star Wars Story is fast-paced, even perhaps breathless, and zips around in its inter-galactic orbit with what feels like reckless glee, creating just the kind of atmosphere that the young, unflappable hero needs in order to thrive and grow.

The film, directed by Ron Howard after original helmers Phil Lord and Chris Miller were kicked to the curb, now sits at a 73 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with 64 "fresh" reviews and 24 "rotten" from 88 critics and a consensus that calls it "a flawed yet fun and fast-paced space adventure" that "should satisfy newcomers to the saga as well as longtime fans who check their expectations at the theater door". Yet, the most important answer given in the film is how Han Solo did the Kessel run in under 12 parsecs - a thrilling sequence that functions as the movie's centerpiece. It seems like that story could be told in what's likely going to be Lando: A Star Wars Story.

"Solo: A Star Wars Story is a crackingly enjoyable adventure which frankly deserves full episode status in the great franchise, not just one of these intermittent place-holding iterations".

Michael Rechtshaffen, The Hollywood Reporter: "Of course, one need not look any further than the poster to know that, along the way, Han will also meet up with faithful companion Chewbacca (former basketball player Joonas Suotamo) and, equally notably, Lando Calrissian (the wildly magnetic Donald Glover doing Billy Dee Williams proud in a casually scene-stealing turn)".

On the surface, there's plenty to enjoy here, especially if you're a longtime enthusiast.

Howard is a fine film-maker, whose directorial career has been strong enough to stop us thinking of him primarily as wholesome Richie Cunningham from the TV sitcom Happy Days, but in truth this movie could do with a Fonz, someone to bestride and own it. While "Solo" hasn't completely overcome the long odds, those harboring a love of the franchise should come away, ultimately, with a good feeling about this. I last saw Jedi five months ago, and can close my eyes right now and remember about 10 different visual tableaus from it.

European Union launches economic plan to save Iran nuclear deal
In the short term, she said, the European Union should focus on diplomacy and reaffirm its positions on the Iran deal. Merkel said the Europeans aren't "blind" to threats posed by Iran's activities in Syria to Israel, for example.

Solo is an origin story for Han Solo (Alden Ehrenreich), first seen running schemes in the street in his home planet of Corellia. Most of the film's best moments amount to cheap fan service.

So it would have been a miracle if the movie even turned out to be half-decent. It might arguably succeed in teeing up the cinematic narrative that would change movies forever.

Who wants to see anyone but old wonky-lips himself, Harrison Ford (pictured), at the controls of the Millennium Falcon as Solo? But we hope that decision ends up being the one Lucasfilm makes.

Would a version directed entirely by Lord and Miller have turned out better than the final product?

We know where destiny will take them. It lacks any of the classical purity we have come to expect from Star Wars, instead dangling tales that will be presumably delivered upon in sequels.
