Tuesday Primaries Ended With Strong GOP Candidates for November

Tuesday Primaries Ended With Strong GOP Candidates for November

As primary season heats up ahead of what are sure to be contentious midterm elections in November, Tuesday night netted some significant wins, and losses, in four states.

Despite the headwind, Blankenship saw a brief surge in polls days before the ballot was open, spooking Republicans who fear such a divisive figure would be unable to unseat the incumbent Democrat Senator Joe Manchin. In Ohio, this fall's gubernatorial race will be a contest between Cordray, on the Democratic side, and Mike DeWine-a former US senator and a close ally of Governor John Kasich-on the Republican side.

(4) Speaking of IN, party insiders are pleased with the nomination of businessman and outside Mike Braun, who will bring a considerable amount of personal resources to the table as he seeks to unseat Joe Donnelly IN a state Trump carried handily. Joe Manchin's general election challenger.

In a possible sign of party unrest, however, Rep. Robert Pittenger lost in North Carolina to the Rev. Mark Harris, a Baptist pastor he narrowly beat two years ago. The two men have circled each other in OH politics for decades, and have run against each other before, in the state's 2010 race for attorney general.

Harris will now face Democrat Dan McCready, a Marine veteran who has already raised nearly $2 million.

In Indiana, Ohio, and West Virginia, this year's GOP primaries were not about who could cite the most American Enterprise Institute talking points or bludgeon voters into electoral submission with the sheer tedious force of their aww-shucks family values charm.

But Tuesday's turnout, where Republicans outvoted Democrats by almost two to one, doesn't bode well for Donnelly.

Richard Cordray, former head of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (now headed by Trump loyalist Mick Mulvaney), will be the Democratic nominee for OH governor.

Prince George is also expected to have a role in the wedding ceremony, which is expected to last around an hour. The royal newlyweds will be spending their first night as husband and wife at Windsor Castle.

Well, luckily for the world, Blankenship lost the Tuesday night primary, and is poised to join Roy Moore in the Hall of Shame for GOP also-rans in the post-Trump world. Blankenship was already a controversial candidate after spending a year in prison for his role in a deadly West Virginia mine explosion. Here are some of the biggest winners and losers in key races from Tuesday night. Claire McCaskill (D) Missouri, Joe Donnelly (D) Indiana, Heidi Heitkamp (D) North Dakota, Sherrod Brown (D) OH, and Manchin are all considered vulnerable this November.

He pledged on Tuesday and at a kickoff event for Democrats' solidified fall ticket on Wednesday to focus the race on "kitchen-table issues".

Morrisey is the first Republican to serve as attorney general in West Virginia since 1933, his campaign website boasts. But losing Mr. Trump's confidence, as Blankenship did, can be costly. The head of the Senate Republican campaign arm has highlighted Blankenship's criminal history. Blankenship said McConnell has created jobs for "China people" and that his "China family" has given him millions of dollars. Blankenship led the company that owned the mine and was sentenced to a year in prison for conspiring to break safety laws, a misdemeanor.

DeWine's victory Tuesday leaves him damaged from a bitter and nasty primary in which Lt. Gov. Mary Taylor likened him to Democrats Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton and questioned his loyalty to President Donald Trump.

Even as Blankenship rebuffed Trump's criticism this week, he described himself as "Trumpier than Trump" and played up his outsider credentials.

"I will predict here that she wins by a strong margin", Van Hollen said. The good news is that his probation ends tomorrow.

"I haven't really thought about what I'm going to do tomorrow", he continued. Tomorrow, I may be in Aruba before sunset.
