Tusk blasts Trump in new push to save Iran deal

Tusk said that he would ask three leaders who are signatories to the Iran nuclear deal - UK Prime Minister Theresa May, German Chancellor Angela Merkelt and French President Emanuel Macron - to present their assessment of the situation following the USA withdrawal.

Mr. Tusk's tweet, however, was one of the more notable, public denunciations of Mr. Trump's decision making by a European leader, as a series of moves on trade, Israel and other issues has increasingly put traditional allies at odds with the administration in Washington.

The break with the USA over the Iran deal is just the latest in a series of major breaches in the transatlantic relationship.

Tusk's public comments on Wednesday also touched on the new USA tariffs on steel and aluminum that are set to bite on June 1 unless Trump grants a reprieve.

Tusk even compared the U.S. administration to Europe's traditional foes Moscow and Beijing as he launched his broadside hours before a dinner of the 28 leaders in Sofia where they will discuss the issue.

The 28 leaders will also discuss the deaths of dozens of Palestinians in Gaza after Trump moved the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem, in another move that the Europeans had strongly opposed.

The European Union insists the deal is working but Trump pulled out saying that it was the "worst" possible agreement.

Reiterating the position of France, Germany and the United Kingdom, the three European powers that helped broker the Iran nuclear agreement, Tusk said that the EU would remain committed to the deal as long as Tehran fulfilled its obligations.

We'll take no lessons from country that occupies Cyprus, Netanyahu tells Erdogan
They were also protesting the relocation of the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, which took place the same day. In an earlier interview with the BBC, Erdogan said Brexit presented "huge opportunities" for their commercial ties.

"Here again, unity is our greatest strength and my objective is simple - we stick to our guns".

European diplomats have sought to play down expectations of Tuesday's meeting, stressing the enormous challenge of finding a way around U.S. sanctions punishing foreign businesses trading with Iran, which have global reach. "That means permanent exemptions from USA tariffs on aluminium and steel". Therefore U.S. tariffs can not be justified on the basis of national security.

This move sparked discontent among the key U.S. trading partners, especially the EU.

Shortly after Trump's election, Tusk had joked that his European colleagues had taken to calling him "Our Donald".

He said that the EU leaders should also get an update from EU foreigh policy chief Federica Mogherini, while European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker will "share his thoughts on how the interests of the European companies engaged in economic cooperation with Iran can be best preserved". But at the news conference in Sofia, he was clearly not in any joking mood.

He added: "Besides traditional political challenges such as the rise of China, or the aggressive stance of Russian Federation, we are witnessing today a new phenomenon: the capricious assertiveness of the American administration".

All the same, the common challenges posed to European Union countries by the Trump administration is forcing the bloc closer together, Tusk said. In order to be the subject and not the object of global politics, Europe must be united economically, politically and also militarily like never before. We realize that if you need a helping hand, you will find one at the end of your arm'.
