United Kingdom ministers attack upper house over Brexit vote

United Kingdom ministers attack upper house over Brexit vote

The British government faced pressure over Brexit at home and overseas Monday, including a defeat in Parliament over who gets the final say on an exit deal with the European Union.

Lords, who sit in parliament's upper chamber, voted 335 to 244 in favour of an amendment that could allow parliament to send Britain back to the negotiating table in Brussels or even halt the Brexit process.

The Lords voted by a majority of 91 to give Parliament a decisive say on the outcome of the Brexit negotiations.

"Second, it demands specific votes by artificial deadlines which, if not met, would give parliament the power to micromanage the government on how to carry out these negotiations".

Lord Newby, the Lib Dem leader in the House of Lords (pictured in Parliament), is pushing for a clause which would force the government to hold a referendum if both the Commons and the Lords voted for one.

Shadow Brexit secretary Sir Keir Starmer said the Lords vote was a "hugely significant moment" and would help to avoid the risk of crashing out of the European Union without a deal.

SNP MP Stephen Gethins MP said the defeat was the "most damaging" the government had suffered.

Mr Davis also suggested that by October it could be possible to get a clear sense of the sort of trade deal which the United Kingdom and European Union will do, which would make the backstop less important.

Game two of the best-of-seven-series is in Boston on Thursday before the next two in Philadelphia. "He's been great all year". With the perimeter shooting the Sixers are capable of, Rozier also has to continue to harass on the defensive end.

He said: "If Parliament votes down the Article 50 deal, then Parliament must decide what happens next".

Supporters of the move argue that MPs should have the power to send Mrs May back to the negotiating table if they disapprove of her deal - or if she can not reach one.

"Whatever our party affiliation, our duty as parliamentarians is to our country and our conscience", he said.

The brewing row over immigration controls comes as Mrs May faces a fresh threat to her Brexit plans in the House of Lords this week.

Leavers' angry tirades against the vote were countered by passionate Remainers, such as Keir Starmer, the shadow Brexit secretary, who called the vote "a hugely significant moment in the fight to ensure parliament has a proper role in the Brexit negotiations and that we avoid a no-deal situation".

Crossbench peer Lord Malloch-Brown, chairman of the pro-EU Best for Britain campaign, said: "This feels like a turning point".

- Was it the only defeat peers inflicted on the Government?
