What is InSight? Take a tour inside Nasa’s new Mars lander

InSight's Rotation and Interior Structure Experiment (RISE) precisely tracks the landers position on the surface of Mars to help determine how much the planet wobbles as it orbits the Sun.

NASA's long-term goal is to send a manned mission to Mars in the 2030s. Mars doesn't have plate tectonics.

Since Earth and Mars are thought to have formed in a similar way, about 4.5 billion years ago, NASA hopes the mission will help understand how the planets formed and why are so different now.

Up until now, previous missions to the Red Planet have concentrated on its exterior by studying martian volcanoes, canyons, rocks and soil.

Even the minuscule uplift of the ground caused by the gravitational pull of Mars's moon, Phobos, should register on its instruments. According to Kristina Williams, the 30th Space Wing at Vandenberg, there is an 80 percent chance that people won't be able to see the InSight Mars lander take off from its Vandenberg launch pad. They also stopped by the Spacecraft Assembly Facility, where the Mars 2020 rover is now being put together.

This new NASA spaceship won't be going alone to Mars. These quakes reverberate through the planet in the form of seismic waves and by listening in with the landers seismometer (SEIS), the properties of Mars's crust, mantle and core can be measured. One InSight instrument will dig 5 meters (16 feet) into the subsurface to measure heat from the interior. Alas, currently, engine power, MarCO will not be enough to slow down the machine and allow it to land on the planet, so they will just observe how InSight lands on the planet. His graduate studies were specifically focused on studying Mars.

Putting woes slow Woods in PGA Tour event
Woods will use a new set of irons this week at Quail Hollow after failing to produce any magic with his old set at Augusta. The greens aren't quite as fast as I remember but they are more hard . "I just gave you credit", Love shouted back.

The ULA rocket will carry the spacecraft over the Channel Islands just off the California Coast and continue climbing out over the Pacific, shadowing the coastline south beyond Baja California.

"But we have never probed sort of beneath the outermost skin of the planet", said Banerdt. During each date's window, launch opportunities are set five minutes apart, but whatever day the lander makes its escapes from Earth, it is scheduled to touch down on the Red Planet on 26 Nov, 2018, around noon PST (3 p.m EST/7 p.m GMT).

Warner, assistant professor of geological sciences at SUNY Geneseo and a planetary geologist, will be at Vandenberg Air Force Base for the liftoff as a member of the InSight Mission science team.

Scientists expect to detect anywhere between a dozen and a hundred of these tremors over the course of two years; some of which could reach up to 6.0 on the Richter scale. "As soon as we're down we'll breathe more than a sigh of relief", he said.

NASA's Mars-bound rocket launch from Southern California could leave San Diego gazers disappointed. The launch window opens at 4:05 a.m. PT (7:05 a.m. ET).
