Aerial footage shows large lava flow wiping out homes in Hawaii

PAHOA, Hawaii-A river of lava spewing from the foot of Hawaii's Kilauea Volcano swallowed about three dozen more homes on the Big Island during a weekend of destruction that brought to almost 120 the number of dwellings devoured since last month, officials said on Monday.

Seaside residents and boaters also have been warned to avoid noxious clouds of laze - a term combining the words "lava" and "haze"-formed when lava reacts with seawater to form a mix of acid fumes, steam and glass-like specks".

Since May 4, some 9,900 quakes have rattled Hawaii Island, the USGS said. "And you don't want to be breathing that".

The lava flow has covered about 7.7 square miles of the island, according to the USGS. "It's like a flood - it's just pouring out, covering everything in its path". (Reuters/Terray Sylvester) Lava threatens homes on the outskirts of Pahoa.

Jared Leto to star in and produce his own Joker movie
They also announced plans for a Birds of Prey movie with Harley Quinn actor Margot Robbie, to be directed by Cathy Yan . Leto would also executive produce the tentpole, which does not yet have a writer or director attached.

There have been various arrests of people forcing their way through blocked areas.

A steam plume first appeared around 10 a.m. Saturday as lava poured into Green Lake in Kapoho, but by 3 p.m. a Hawaii County Fire Department overflight confirmed to the US Geological Survey that the lake had filled with lava and the body of water was no more. "And I don't know what to do", she said.

Four people were evacuated from an isolated part of the Kapoho community Sunday, according to the Hawaii Fire Department. They stopped to inquire of their situation, and then when asked, airlifted them to a safe place. These were vacation homes and rentals, as well as primary residences. But with the latest releases of lava showing few signs of subsiding, residents are bracing for the possibility that the monthlong phase of the eruption could stretch for weeks or even months.

A wide, slow-moving river of lava from the Kilauea volcano has claimed hundreds of additional homes in the southeastern corner of Hawaii's Big Island, officials say, marking what could be the most destructive day of the now monthlong volcanic eruption. This eruption has lasted longer than the 1955 and 1924 eruptions, the USGS said.
