American Soldier Killed In Somalia

It was the first public announcement of a us military combat death on the African continent since four USA service members were killed in a militant ambush in Niger in October.

U.S. troops with Somali and Kenyan forces came under mortar and small-arms fire in Jubaland, Somalia around 2:45 p.m. local time, U.S. Africa Command said in a statement.

The attack marks the first known combat death of a U.S. service member in African since the October 4 ambush of United States and Nigerian forces which killed four USA troops and five Nigerians.

Three of the four wounded US service members were evacuated to receive additional medical treatment, the military said.

The al Qaida-linked al-Shabaab extremist group, which is based in Somalia and controls parts of the country's rural south and central regions, claimed responsibility.

One coalition service member was wounded. Most of those "troops in contact" incidents were in Somalia because "we have active operations ongoing there", he said.

"We attacked a military base killed one USA soldier, two Kenyan soldiers and nine Somali soldiers from Jubbaland state".

Umtiti to sign new five-year deal with Barca
He was a major part of them winning La Liga this season and has just got better and better in his time at the Camp Nou. Before putting pen to paper on a fresh five-year deal, Manchester United had been eyeing a deal for the Frenchman.

A US Department of Defence (DoD) representative said one US solider was killed.

But President Donald Trump in early 2017 approved expanded military operations against al-Shabab, leading to an increase in US military personnel to more than 500 and the launch of dozens of drone strikes. The group was blamed for the truck bombing in Mogadishu in October that killed more than 500 people and raised concerns about al-Shabaab's ability to build ever-larger explosives. He said that US forces in Africa had come under fire about 10 times during the past year.

"My thoughts and prayers are with the families of our serviceman who was killed and his fellow servicemen who were wounded in Somalia", Trump tweeted.

"The mission's objectives were to clear al-Shabab from contested areas, liberate villages from al-Shabab control, and establish a permanent combat outpost created to increase the span of Federal Government of Somalia security and governance", AFRICOM said.

The U.S. forces were accompanying Somali and other African forces at the time, helping to set up an outpost to clear the area of al-Shabab fighters.

Al-Shabab, which is fighting to impose Shariah law across Somalia, was pushed out of the capital, Mogadishu, and other major urban cities more than two years ago.
