Dominic Thiem downs injury-hit Alexander Zverev to reach third consecutive SF

Dominic Thiem downs injury-hit Alexander Zverev to reach third consecutive SF

Zverev says he spends up to four hours each day working on weights and fitness in the gym. It paid off today."A tight first set heated up in the 10th game when Zverev saved two set points, the second after becoming incensed when the umpire overturned a line call out from a Khachanov shot. But the Russian sealed the set at the third time of asking, leaving the world number three needing a fightback for the third consecutive match".

The rise of the young German in the last 18 months has been impressive indeed following his first title in St Petersburg: five titles last year-including a two Masters-and two titles from four finals-including three Masters finals-so far this year. But the German player also showed, once again, that he knows how to dig deep when it matters.

On his third set point, the erratic Zverev found the net again with a sloppy backhand.

Dominic Thiem celebrates winning his fourth round match against Japan's Kei Nishikori.

The Austrian blew the Monte Carlo finalist away in the first two sets, lost the third, but came through 6-2 6-0 5-7 6-4 to land in a third consecutive Roland Garros quarterfinal.

"Of course, for both of us I think we would have been very happy if we both went through this stage..."

But he was then beaten in straight sets by Zverev in the final, two years after the Austrian prevailed in the round of 32 at Roland Garros.

Zverev was coming off a trio of wins that went five sets and, while still just 21, could not will his body to another comeback.

That was the first set Nadal had dropped on clay since also losing to Thiem in Rome 12 months earlier.

Macron and Trudeau vow to confront Trump on tariffs
On the agenda for the two-day summit will be economic growth, employment, gender equality, climate change and world peace. At last year's G-7 summit in Sicily , Macron said he could talk the USA out of withdrawing from the climate accord.

It was hard to discern which was less likely: that 12-time major champion Novak Djokovic would falter in his French Open quarterfinal or that Marco Cecchinato, who never won a Grand Slam match until last week and once faced a possible ban for losing on goal, would rise to the occasion.

"I knew I'm not going to win the match".

The second-set tiebreaker was scrappy, Zverev clinching it with an ace to level the match.

"First week, my goal is to get to the second week", said 23-year-old Keys.

Women's fourth round: No. 1 Simona Halep beat No. 16 Elise Mertens 6-2, 6-1; No. 14 Daria Kasatkina beat No. 2 Caroline Wozniacki 7-6 (5), 6-3; No. 3 Garbine Muguruza beat Lesia Tsurenko 2-0, retired; No. 12 Angelique Kerber beat No. 7 Caroline Garcia 6-2, 6-3; No. 28 Maria Sharapova advanced when Serena Williams withdrew from the tournament. On Suzanne Lenglen, Madison Keys will face Yulia Putintseva. She will now face compatriot Sloane Stephens for a place in the final.

"In two days' time I will be playing in the quarter-finals here, and I'm happy about that", said Zverev.

While Zverev still has time to make his mark at the highest level, Thiem wants to do better right now as he is almost 25 and he wants more than his two French Open semi-finals from 2016 and 2017.

Claycourt specialist Thiem's relentless accuracy from the baseline proved too much for second seed Zverev who looked jaded after a gruelling path to his first Grand Slam quarterfinal.
