Donald Trump explains G7 summit and what happened with Justin Trudeau

At his closing press conference, Trudeau called US steel and aluminum tariffs "insulting" and pledged to proceed with previously announced retaliatory tariffs.

Instead of telling Trump directly, Trudeau waited until the President was departing the summit, then told reporters in a news conference that he meant to press ahead with retaliatory tariffs against USA products, declaring that Canada "will not be pushed around".

Trump made the comments in tweets from Air Force One as he headed to Singapore for his summit with North Korea's Kim Jong Un.

France has warned that "fits of anger" can not not dictate worldwide cooperation after US President Donald Trump abruptly rejected a previously agreed joint statement in the wake of a fractious Group of Seven (G7) summit in Canada.

The Trump administration imposed aluminum and steel tariffs on the other G-7 members - the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, France, Canada and Japan - ratcheting up tensions between the US and its allies in the run-up to the summit.

The president said he was annoyed by Trudeau's comments about not letting Canada get pushed around.

Officials from European delegations quickly leaked copies of the joint statement, and it was published online moments before Trump tweeted.

President Donald Trump's trade policy adviser, Peter Navarro, apologized Tuesday for his "inappropriate" comment suggesting that "there's a special place in hell" for Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

We have to stand behind our prime minister - just as we did many years ago - in steadfastly placing blame where it deserves to be, and that's in Washington.

Heyman added he's "of course ... embarrassed" about Trump's behavior during the G-7 meeting, arguing the United States "was doing everything it could do to disrupt this meeting".

The group of seven nations that make up the G7 are Canada, France, the United States, the UK, Germany, Japan and Italy.

"It's very unfair, and it's very unfair to our workers, and I'm gonna straighten it out".

Spokesman Cameron Ahmad said on Saturday night that Mr Trudeau "said nothing he hasn't said before - both in public and in private conversations" with Mr Trump.

At the G-7 summit, Trudeau doubled down and said, "Canadians will not be pushed around". "And it won't even be tough".

Despite the tension between Trump, Europe and Canada, the president has emphasized what he has described as strong relations.

President Emmanuel Macron reacted with a statement slamming Mr Trump's behaviour at the summit.

The Americans' criticism of Trudeau left a former Canadian prime minister, Stephen Harper, stumped. Now the US, Canada and Mexico are renegotiating the NAFTA agreement which Trump had earlier deemed to be unfair for the US. Among other things, she said the government should be preparing to keep pace with corporate tax cuts and tax breaks south of the border.
