Facebook alerts 14M to privacy bug that changed status composer to public

Facebook said Thursday that it would notify 14 million users that posts they meant to share privately may have been published publicly, the company's latest setback as it tries to rebuild user trust after the Cambridge Analytica scandal.

"We recently found a bug that automatically suggested posting publicly when some people were creating their Facebook posts", Chief Privacy Officer Erin Egan, said in a statement.

During the period, any post an affected user published on Facebook would have automatically been posted publicly.

"We'd like to apologize for this mistake", Egan said. If you're one of the affected users, go to your notifications and check for the alert, which includes a roster of links to your potentially affected posts.

Facebook says it didn't make the posts private until May 27, so it's possible that mere acquaintances could have seen sensitive info during that nine-day span.

Facebook was back in the spotlight in the past few days after the New York Times reported that Facebook had data-sharing contracts with device makers like Apple and Samsung.

Melania Trump attends first public event since kidney operation
Before the reception, amid ongoing memes and questions about her boss, Ms Grisham said the "nonsense" was fuelled by the media. Mrs Trump made her worldwide debut as first lady at last year's G7 summit in Italy, and went on to attend the G20 in Germany.

According to TechCrunch, the bug was caused by a new tool Facebook is building called featured items, which "highlights photos and other content [on a user's profile]". For ten days in May, Facebook's status-update tool did not retain user-specified privacy settings, resorting to the default instead.

Facebook reassured users the problem has now been fixed.

It's the latest privacy scandal in what has been a hard few months for the world's largest social media company.

Facebook has stated that these types of notifications will be used going forward to report privacy issues or breaches. Those were set to be publicly visible, but Facebook accidentally extended that setting to all new posts.

Users can also manually change the privacy of the posts - anywhere from "public" to "only me" - when publishing to Facebook.

It was unclear if users could have done anything to their settings to prevent being affected by the bug the company revealed on Thursday.
