Steve Nicol: If this happens, Liverpool can sign Fekir

A deal was in the works for the Anfield side to sign Nabil Fekir for a fee in the region of £52.75m (£48.35m paid up front plus £4.4m in add-ons).

In a statement, Lyon said: "The three-way negotiations with Liverpool and Nabil were not successful and Olympique Lyonnais made a decision to end the negotiations at 20:00 (UTC)".

Le Graet, speaking in Lyon a few hours before France played the United States in a World Cup warm up game in the city, said: "These are negotiations".

"Although Liverpool have been the priority of a possible transfer for Nabil, Olympique Lyonnais is delighted to be able to count on the presence of our captain, who is a leading player for the 2018-19 season when the club will play in the Champions League".

He has won a place in the France World Cup squad for his performances, though Antoine Griezmann is set to be preferred to him in the starting XI for Saturday's final warm-up friendly against the USA.

He came through Lyon's youth system and has made 153 appearances for the club, scoring 57 goals, having made his debut in 2013.

Sorry Liverpool fans, Fekir isn't going anywhere... for now, at least.

Liverpool was hoping to add Fekir to their off-season signings of Monaco midfielder Fabinho and RB Leipzig's Naby Keita.

Liverpool were hoping to finalise a deal with Fekir before France departed for the World Cup, which begins in Russian Federation next week.

According to French outlet L'Equipe, the 24-year-old had already chosen his shirt number on Merseyside, suggesting the deal was ready to be completed.

Speculation is swirling about why the deal has not been rubber-stamped.

At the end of the day, a fee was agreed, a medical was conducted and passed despite the issue found, the only issue is that Liverpool want a slightly reduced price to offset the risk of signing the probability of Fekir getting injured in the future. That's logical, we've done it for other players.
