The Great 8: Alex Ovechkin crowned playoff MVP

The Great 8: Alex Ovechkin crowned playoff MVP

Being up three games to one has often been a risky series lead for the Washington Capitals, which might be why the Vegas Golden Knights are favored to stave off elimination in the Stanley Cup final on Thursday night.

Their series-clinching, 4-3 victory over the Vegas Golden Knights on Thursday mirrored a season that saw them continually overcome hurdles.

Devante Smith-Pelly and Lars Eller scored two minutes and 31 seconds apart to erase a third-period deficit, while Jakub Vrana and Alex Ovechkin rounded out the scoring for the Capitals. Day and night difference for him and he has to be sharper in this game for them to have a chance.

Marc-Andre Fleury - I've said it before about Fleury, but he simply has to be better. With their season on the line and no more losses to spare, Vegas will look to give Washington their best game of the series Thursday night.

Vegas has gotten away from their game, and they need everybody to re-find it if they want this dream to stay alive. Alex Ovechkin one-timed a flawless cross-ice pass into the net before Marc-Andre Fleury could dive across his crease.

The under is 3-0-1 in the last four Washington games on Thursday.

Colin Miller fired a pass into the slot that Tomas Tatar redirected past Capitals goalie Braden Holtby. The Caps challenged for goalie interference, but were denied. Then immediately following that goal, a massive fight broke out. Carrier hadn't played since the second round against San Jose, while Perron was a healthy scratch for only one game.

On their first power play, the Capitals couldn't get anything to work outside of an Alex Ovechkin shot that pinged off the post.

Rafael Nadal trails Diego Schwartzman before rain ends play at French Open
Though Nadal hit back to level for 2-2, the plucky Argentinian broke again with a thumping forehand to regain control. The victor will face either Juan Martin del Potro or Marin Cilic, who were locked at 5-5 in a first-set tiebreak.

Moments later, the Knights struggled to keep up with the Caps' puck movement and Brett Connolly open for a shot.

Washington outshot Vegas 10-7 in the first period.

The veteran netminder has led them on the ice, with four shutouts this postseason, and off the ice with his Stanley Cup-winning experience. They said they didn't see it. "He's pretty calm. The guys read off that".

"We did it", Ovechkin said. "We've overcome a lot of adversity, and this is just another task".

Washington scored at least one goal in the third period in nine of their final 11 postseason games.

Now, their legacies won't be hindered by a lack of a Stanley Cup.

The Golden Knights pulled Fleury for an extra attacker with 2:04 remaining. Vegas is +165 laying.5 goals in the opening period according to 5Dimes.

This is the song the Capitals play after the intro video when they come out onto the ice. "We wouldn't be here without him".
