United have reportedly informed Leicester City that they want to sign the £65m rated defender, and Leicester have responded by telling them that he is not for sale.

Manchester United are thought to still be on the lookout for a number of new signings as Jose Mourinho prepares for his third season in charge of the Red Devils.

Meanwhile, Chris Smalling has admitted he struggled to come to terms with his omission from England's World Cup squad but says no damage has been done to his morale because he is still appreciated at United.

Martial is ready to quit United after his agent revealed last month that the 22-year-old wanted to leave in search of regular football.

Surely, even Woodward - who is clearly not a football man - and evidently, many of whose previous player signings have either already been replaced or are going to be replaced very soon by Mourinho - must have been aware that the World Cup in June was only going to make negotiations with other clubs increasingly hard - what with the volatility in perception and price - fluctuating at will.

United finished runners-up to local rivals Manchester City last season but Mourinho's side were a massive 19 points behind Pep Guardiola's champions.

The Frenchman trained with United's squad at their UCLA training base in Los Angeles on Tuesday then departed some time afterwards.

Manchester United are touring the United States at the moment.

"Hi everybody. Guess who is back watching United train?"

According to sources, the deal is in the range of £65 millions, making the 25 year old one of the costliest defenders in the world. "I'm not happy to have just a few players".

"He said that he knows I can be the best but he sometimes feels frustrated that I'm not doing that", added Shaw.

"Matteo wants to leave and I think when a player wants to leave if the right offer arrives you have to try to be human and let the player follow his instinct".
