Blood Moon 2018: Complete lunar eclipse the longest of this century

The moon will appear red in the night sky Friday night as it moves into Earth's shadow, perfectly aligned with Earth and the sun.

SingAstro member Chin Zong Yang, 26, said, ahead of the event: "Tonight's lunar eclipse will be special because it is the longest of the century - lasting one hour and 43 minutes - in addition to the Mars opposition".

We may not be able to see this week's total lunar eclipse here in D.C., but you can take in the views from around the world via livestream.

The eclipse will be visible in the regions covering Australia, Asia, Russia - except the northern part, Africa, Europe, east of South America and Antarctica. These red rays are always cast into the space behind Earth, but they are normally drowned out by the sun's direct light.

The last blood moon was observed on January 31 2018.

As with most eclipses, conspiracy theorists believe it is a sign of the end times and is referred to as the Blood Moon prophecy. Apps such as The Photographer's Ephemeris and PhotoPills give detailed information on things such as moonrise times and the position of the moon in the sky based on geographical location.

Trump Warns Iran: ‘Never, Ever Threaten the United States Again’
Asked at the White House if he had concerns about provoking Iran, Trump said simply, "None at all". "BE CAUTIOUS!", Trump wrote. In the case of North Korea, she pointed out, the crisis was declared over despite any nuclear weapons being dismantled.

"In the middle of a lunar eclipse it can look as if a red planet has taken up residence near the Earth - they are both eerie and attractive", Robert Massey of the RAS said.

It sounds impossible - an eclipse occurs when the Sun, Earth and Moon are in a straight line - meaning you couldn't see the Moon and the Sun at the same time.

He said the moon would begin to enter earth's shadow (known as the penumbra) around 5.15am and would gradually dim until about 6.25am. In Ethiopia's capital, Addis Ababa, people at an open-air restaurant admired a rare clear view during the rainy season, comparing a live NASA webcast to what they saw above. In a famous passage in the Book of Joel in the Hebrew Bible, it warns that "the sun will turn into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and awful day of the Lord comes". The moon will be below the horizon and out of sight in the United States, Canada, Mexico and other North American countries during the eclipse.

Mars will more likely appear as a very bright star. It will be an opportunity for all curious people and astronomy enthusiasts to observe the "loodd moon" and admire the longest lunar eclipse of the century.
