Cubs acquire lefty Cole Hamels in trade with Rangers

Despite his struggles, the Cubs apparently feel like he can return to form.

The Chicago Cubs have acquired Cole Hamels from the Texas Rangers for a group on minor league prospects, according to sources. The deal, which would also include the Rangers sending cash to offset part of the $10 million in 2018 salary still owed to Hamels, was unofficial pending medical information.

The 34-year old has had a rough season with a 5-9 record with a 4.72 ERA and 1.37 WHIP. Those numbers have been hurt by a bad July for Hamels, who is 1-3 with a 11.12 ERA in four starts after carrying a 3.61 ERA into the month.

In 2015, Hamels threw a no-hitter against the Cubs on July 25th at Wrigley Field.

Hamels is 152-111 in his career with a 3.43 ERA in 383 games with the Rangers and Phillies, and he's 7-6 with a 3.48 postseason ERA.

"To be able to change kind of the mindset, now to go on a first-place team, there's something inside of you that sparks when you get in those situations, " Hamels said.
